Thinking of dumping FS98 files & pages from simviation.

Although there seems to be a firm following for CFS, FS98 seems to have few if any contributions these days & I wonder if the time has come to scrap it from this site.

Any thoughts or comments welcome.

I agree. All those FS98 files are just taking up valuable space.

Go ahead and dump 'em Wink

Well... The FS 98 Forum still gets a few posts these days Smiley

The only problem is that some designers may want to use FS 98 file for current projects. I mean, let's say for example there's no SR-71 panel for FS 2002/4 but there's one for FS 98, all the designer would need to do is change the gauge entries and maybe touch up the bitmap ???

The decision is yours Pete. I think it might be a tad premature. There is still a surprising number of people using FS98 & I've answered questions on it recently from new users - both on this forum & by E-mail. I was actually thinking of adding a couple of new tutes to the Lair. Also bear in mind that FS98 aircraft & scenery are compatible with CFS1.

When (!) I had CFS1, which was up 'till last November I had more FS98 files in it than CSF1! As it happens, I have a touched up Fs98 in my FS2002 now. I wouldn't chuck it. Or if you have to, why not back it up onto CD / DVD? That way they could be replaced...

Fairy snuff Pete, I'd say we have less than a posting a week in there, sometimes over a month can go by with nothing happening.
Maybe its time to free-up some server space Wink

355 pages of FS98 files do NOT fit onto a couple of CD's  Grin Roll Eyes

Needless to say I have multiple back up systems here - including a PC & external HD specifically for backups.

Overall it's hard to know ..... Almost no new files are being produced for CFS using FS98 base files

BUT  : Just looked at the log files & it has to be said that just last week - 1 week -  1425 people looked at the latest FS98 military page alone - so that's quite a lot ... I suppose that means there are still many 1000's of FS98 page views per month currently ... so I think it stays for now.  8)

I hate to point this out but in the last year i've seen more new addons for FS98 than for CFS3. I say keep it if you can. As you say, it still seems quite popular.

Rather than it being an all or nothing matter how about dropping the least active downloads and the oldest posts?  Maybe with the goal of reclaiming, say, a third of the space used.  You get some disk space back and you get to gauge the community response.

1000's of pageviews without associated download bandwidth costs...

Well, as I see it...we'll have to pry FS 98 off the server ourselves if we want it gone. Smiley

What's really sad is that i've even seen new FS5.1 packages within the last couple months appear in the new files section over at Flightsim Roll Eyes

Hmmmmm

Where would we scenery designers get aircraft for static scenery if all the FS98 and FS5 stuff disappeared? Would you believe I've just had to reinstall FS98 on my system so I could use the FS98 converter to make a static scenery macro that I needed (FS5 A6 Prowler).

I know it's a bit of a specialised thing and there are guys like Mike Hill with quite a bit of stuff on his site, but it's already becoming tough to find good material. Simviation has one of the best (if not the best) databases of FS98 material. Not all of it is suitable but when it's wiped the good goes the same way as the not so.

How much disk space is actually involved Pete? Might not be on because of cost and logistics but might a disk dump be possible so I could put stuff on my own (sorry - private) server?

My disk of FS '98 sits amongst all my other games, (including all the later flight sims), and I would hate to see the thread disappear. It's a nice Simviation record of early flight sims and probably has plenty of enthusiasts left, (...like me with my Sinclair Spectrum games)...LOL...!
I don't know...If it doesn't take up too much necessary space, then keep it going for a while, and see what happens...!

Can't you get rid of it to another site of it's own?
It would help speed up the site if you got rid of it. This site is getting slower I think.
I have no time for the 98 sim. It was a poor show from Microsoft, especially when compared with Flight Unlimited. Flight Unlimited is just as old, yet it rivals the 2002 sim pretty well considering.
And it's only £4.99

There are clearly arguments either way but it looks like Pete is thinking towards tretaining it.

Others have mentioned the matter of dropping off older posts - is this viable, or are there reasons both technical and/or social for retaining them at length ?  I know it means you could sort back thru them looking for a previous subject you had seen but does anyone do this ?     Certainly not the "newbies" as the same questions have been put regularly over the years.

Remove the FS98 pages? I remember 5 years ago when that's all this site had. Keep them, although there isin't that many new files being produced,  people are still downloading the old ones.

Go on Pete, go ahead. It'll speed up the site and free up lots more space. That should make running it cheaper too, shouldn't it?

Ben,

Yes it would make it cheaper to run, because it would use less disk space & bandwidth. However, all the people who use this site for FS98 stuff will be forced out and have to go to another (rival) site. We don't want that, do we?

IMHO we should keep the pages. There is a lot of good stuff there that a lot of visitors download (me included).

Hi Jonathan! Smiley
But could not Pete remove the posts in the forum? and sift through the downloads to leave just the best ones. ??? Getting rid of the posts would be a great start.
There is so much stuff on there that hardly anyone uses. I really think that it should be axed. Even if the download section is kept until the next version of FS at least the posts should be dumped.
Come to terms here, the 2000 sim is selling on ebay for about £7 I believe, if that. Most computers should be able to handle that. If they can't, then I'm sorry, but we have to remember that there must be something up with the people. I mean if they are really serious aviators, are they really going to be going for FS98? It needs to go in the museum soon! Wink

Hi Ben!

Yes, I agree that a lot of the older FS98 posts should be deleted. As for choosing only the best files to keep, quality is a matter of opinion. So I think we should dump a lot of the old FS98 posts, but keep all the files for the moment. I think the only time to get rid of them is when nobody downloads them any more.

Cheers,
Jonathan 8)

1st - for some folk that seemed to think I was referring to the FS98 forum - no...  Roll Eyes  Wink

I was talking about the FS98 side of the site .. & I have been admirably persuaded not to do so.

So - like I said earlier in the thread ..... it stays ....  Wink
