Quote:Okay well just to prove that inspite of my bias I do know a little about these pretenders-to-the-crown, the MkXII was the only Griffon engined Spit with a single stage supercharger!
41 Sqn were the first to receive Mk XIIs, then 91 Sqn, a few turned up with 595 Sqn as well.
The major modification to the 21 was her wings. A new design, which had to accomodate longer U/C as well as bigger (5% if I remember correctly) ailerons, based on the piano hinge system and needing weight-tabs to balance them. This was the first ever change in wing shape for a Spit. And because of the taller U/C I believe she was the first to take the bigger (11ft diameter?) 5 bladed rotol prop. Did the XII have the extended wingtips as well Roger?
As for the ace, well that is EASY!!! Ray Harries was the only pilot to become an ace on the Spitfire XII with 9 kills, and was the top-scoring Welsh ace with 16.5 kills total.
Ozzy
Still a few missing there old chap

Most MkXII, but not all, had clipped wings for it's low-level roll. Anyhow, here are all the answers to put you out of your misery

Griffon Spitfire Trivia
Amongst the production Griffon Spits, what was unique about the MkXII?
A: Well, you could have had the Coffman bulge in the centre of the cowl and the single stage super charger for low-level work, but the answer I was looking for was the MkV style asymmetric Radiator/oil cooler system. All other production Griffon types had the symmetrical layout.
How many front line squadrons operated the MkXII and which ones?
A: There were two, 41 and 91 Squadrons.
By wars end, how many mark XII “Aces” were there?
A: Just one. Squadron Leader Raymond Harries of 91 Squadron was the only MkXII Ace, scoring 9 victories on this type.
What two types of German jet were shot down by Spitfire MkXIV’s?
A: The ME 262 and Arado Ar 234
On April 26 1945, two F Mk21’s achieved the types only notable combat success. What was it?
A: Flt. Lt. W. Marshall and J. Draper of 91 Squadron strafed and reported sunk a German Midget Submarine off the Hook of Holland.
What major modification was introduced on the Mk21?
A: The Mk21 saw the introduction of a completely new wing for the first time on a Spitfire. The track was wider with fully enclosed landing gear when retracted and armament was 2 x 20mm cannon per wing.
On February 5 1952, Flt. Lt. Ted Powers attained a new altitude record for a Spitfire.
1: How high?
2: What type of Spitfire?
A: Flt. Lt. Powers took Spitfire PR MkXIX PS852 to an altitude of 51,500ft.
Had it gone into production, what would have been the main roll of the F Mk23?
A: The F Mk23 was intended as a high altitude interceptor.
How many types of Spitfire served in the Korean War?
A: Just one, the Seafire FR Mk47. Spitfire 24’s at Kai Tak received Korean War stripes in case they were needed but were never deployed to the War.
What was the main difference between the Seafire FR46 and the FR47?
A: The FR47 had a lengthened air intake, just below the nose, shorter barrelled MkV cannons and more fuel tanks, but the main difference was the wing fold. No FR46’s were built with folding wings.
