Someone explain to me the star ratings. Is the # of stars by # of posts or amount of time you have been a member? What do different colors of stars and the title attached mean?

the gold stars are the number of posts you have (1-5 stars)
the red/orange ones signify the admin
the green ones signify a moderator

Don't attach any special meaning to the number of stars. It's merely eye-candy related to the number of posts one has .. and it can easily be set up so you get a "star" for each of the first five posts you make, and so within 5 posts you're "maxed" out. Default in this type of forum, I believe, is 500 for a "resident".
