It all depends on what kind of shooter you want.
I really only like the tactical shooters, so in my opinion Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield is the best.

I personally like the Rainbow 6 series, but the best action game is Half Life, soon to be out done by Half Life 2 come March (22?)

Best "Quality" hmm, if thats atmosphere, graphics, sounds, and gameplay, I'd say go get Call of Duty.

I also love Battlefield 1942 and the "Desert Combat" Mod for it. 8)
The Battlegroup42 Mod has Lancasters!!! http://www.battlegroup42.com/index.htm

Half-Life for the sheer number of mods for it! - and the core games superb to boot!

I still like Medal of Honor, that "Omaha beach" level has to be played in a dark room with LOUD 5.1 sound.... 8)

But, for an FS site, IMHO the best shooter out there is CFS2.

Call of Duty and all the Medal of Honor games. Took me forever to get up the beach and beyond at Omaha. Killer play there, awesome experience.

CFS2 for FSs as far as all around flight combat, IL2 Forgotten Battles for graphics and AI intelligence as an opponent.

Here's a little honey that I always go back and play now and then. Return to Castle Wolfenstien. Love this game. Great graphics, great shooter and will even scare the crap out of you the first time you play it. Still gives me a start now and then, and I know what's coming. lol

Systemax Sabre Ultimate gaming rig.&&&&I got all the goodies and all the power I need to run anything thrown at me for the next two months!

Hiddend and Dangerous1 was good. But riddled with bugs. But I still play it sometime. If you have a good rig then Hidden and Dangerous2 is worth looking into.

Vietcong will work well on a low/middle range PC. But it gets a bit stuttery at times. But on a good rig it should be fine.

Then there's Mafia, MOHAA (Allied Assult is the best and the smoothest running. Though Spearhead as a lot going for it.) Rainbow6 is brilliant. The first mission in the original game is great fun. I played it so many times I got the overall mission time to 1 minute 27 seconds. And the one minute was taken up by getting into position. Grin

So yeah, any of the above really. BF1942 is a multiplayer game and I havn't played Call of Duty. But I'm sure it's no better than Hidden and Dangerous2.

The first one, from way, way, WAY back in the day? I tried playing that recently again, and the graphics made my eyes hurt after about half an hour

http://www.battlegroup42.com/index.htm its a "mod" for Battlefield 1942 which incidentally Woodlouse, plays just fine (once you've patched it) in single player - instant battle or campaign. Its certainly best on-line with an ADSL connection. Wink

i agree with 526th...Medal of Honor and Call of Duty are outstanding. Multiplayer MOH is addictive, so beware! i've played multiplayer MOH for 13 consecutive hours before.(with bathroom breaks)

Ok, since I last posted in this thread I have purchased H&D2, awesome game! Highly recommended.

Also, based on fretnstuff's comments, I finally found Iron Storm sitting in the dusty shelf section at Wat Mart. $10.00 is not much to pay for a great game. Excellent graphics, good story line, tough play even on Easy. There are some places that are extremely difficult until you figure out exactly how to get through them. The enemy, when they are distant from you, are not too intelligent, but when they are after you they are extremely smart.

Thanks for the tip fretnstuff. This is a "Hanger On To!"

Well you gotta have bathroom breaks. Grin

But he's right, MOH Online is seriously addictive. But when you get those servers that have CRAPPY mods, it's hard to play those. I played something called a Jedi Mod. There were no guns, but you could still shoot, and it's a one hit kill no matter where. And it's a rapid fire rifle only. Keep clickin, no reload. Really annoying when they get a lucky shot at your big toe. Or the crotch, I prefer the big toe though...

Can you post some screenshots of H&D2? I waited nearly four years for that game. And now its out my computer is to crappy to even run it. And I didn't need to buy it and test it to find that out.

H&D 2 really is nice. Even on easier settings it's tricky enough but on the hardest...Oh my. No saving, lotsa sharp shooting enemies etc. There's an expansion coming for it this autumn-Sabre Squadron. Should be cool, comes with co-op this time.
Call of Duty is OK, especially the Stalingrad levels are outstanding. It's too short, though, about 8 hours on SP. Expansion coming for that too:)
If you're looking for something different, you could try Aliens versus Predator Gold. It's about the scariest game you can find. You feel very vulnerable as a Colonial Marine: panic is the word.)

Call of Duty is excellent. Especially when you do it in hardest setting (you will die in a lot of places). Stalingrad is the best part. It is amazing that you actually survive so many bullets (although it only takes a couple of hits to kill you), although you do die a lot in those missions. It is a very immersive game. The expansion will make it longer, which is better.

Far Cry as far as I am concerned is THE shooter to have. Problem is you need a kick ass PC & graphics card to play it.
