Or in the case of the Bristol Fighter, considered to be one of the finest Aircraft to come out of WW1, they fitted a Lewis Gun on a Scarf ring to take the weight and gave the pilot some crew to use it.

Nice picture of the Bristol Fighter, my favourite WW1 aeroplane (lovely noise, or purr...). Not too sure about the scary man in the back seat though...
