I've recently upgraded from my old and hated Celeron 1.7 to an early 1.8 p4.... The performance gain was very good indeed , alas, CFS3 was'nt as impressed, surprise surprise!  Roll Eyes Anyway, its war now! I'm having to bite the bullet, and for once go buy something half decent with a half awful budget.  Embarrassed

Thus, my p4's going to be my #2 machine, the FX5600 will be migrating to an 2.4ghz 800fsb p4 with an Asus / SIS655FX or possibly TX motherboard along with 512MB of Dual Channel PC400 DDR3200.
I can't wait to see what my FX5600 is really capable of - I think the new p4 & 8xAGP should FINALLY run CFS3 - Pigs may fly, you never know!

Build scheduled for after the usual Saturday routine of kids 'n shopping!  Roll Eyes

A review of the Asus P4S800D-E, seems pretty good from what I've read.

I'll report progress, if I get any!  Roll Eyes - If CFS3 finally runs well, I may be too shocked to type though.....  Undecided

Paul.

Now you're gonna make me go research the SIS655 chipset mate.

I bought one a while back because it was cheap....

It was. I bought it because it was an Asus and didn't know there was a big deal with chipsets at the time.

I've glanced at a couple impressive statistcs about the new SIS chipsets, but didn't go into detail because I still had a sour taste.

CFS3? You might have cracked it!  Wink

Anyway, I'm off to sus out your new mainboard.
--------------------------------------------------------

just had a look.

Overclock Features ASUS JumperFree
ASUS C.P.R.(CPU Parameter Recall)CPU, Memory, and AGP voltage adjustableSFS (Stepless Frequency Selection) from 100MHz up to 300MHz at 1MHz increment
Adjustable FSB/DDR ratio, fixed AGP/PCI frequencies

MuaHaHAHa!!!!  Grin
--------------------------------------------------------

Cool! I just read a review on a reference board with that chipset and a 2.6ghz P4.

Rough figures............

Your's.....
bandwidth 4.8 gb/sec, SSSandra CPU benchtest 7800mips

mine.... (2.4ghz P4 on Intel865PE chipset, 512mb PC3200)
bandwidth 4.0 gb/sec, SSSandra CPU benchtest 7400mips

mine over clocked:
bandwidth 4.4 gb/sec, SSSandra CPU benchtest 9500mips

AMD XP2600+ on nVidia nForce2 chipset, 333mhz, 1024mb PC2700
bandwidth 2.5 gb/sec, SSSandra CPU benchtest 7766mips

The AMD is my simming PC, it's nearly a year old and still sitting pretty! Longest time I ever had a PC! (pity I can't keep an op sys going as long..... oh yes, I just reformatted AGAIN.... Trying to overclock my poor AMD up 50% on my FSB speed really killed my windows config files [don't try this at home kids] ).   DOH!   Tongue
Oh well, it was in the interest of science .....   Wink

Roll Eyes

Whale Oil Beef Hooked!  CFS3 runs superbly.......

PAH !

I @*!king well wish it did!

9fps @ 800x600 with sliders on 3  trying to strafe an axis airfield Angry

25fps with everything on 1 and just me in free flight.....  Roll Eyes

I know from the great fun I'm having with games such as Battlefield 1942, Nascar Racing 2003 etc at absolute max settings that the machines well up for anything I now throw at it.

I guess ,for me anyway, CFS3 just would'nt be CFS3 without those stutters and shite fps rates.

Back to CFS2 (Not that I ever left it!) !

I love it Congo!  Cheesy I hate CFS3 with verve!!!!  Angry

I settled on the 2.6ghz 800fsb p4 in the end ,swanny338, its a beastie! lol

Thus far, with a standard intel heatsink & fan (the one that comes with the "retail" CPU) I've achieved 3.0ghz with a slight increase in temperature (about 6deg) considering how quick it is with everything EXCEPT CFS3, I've gone back to stock 2.6ghz and its peachy!  Smiley

Tonight, its re-format & fresh install time, I've got to try this, SURELY CFS3 should run well after this......  Roll Eyes

So far, I've seen a peak of 320fps in CFS2! perhaps, aiming for a smooth 25fps or so in CFS3 isn't asking too much? is it???

Paul.

P.S., when I say smooth CFS3, I'm talking of running it at 800x600 everything @3 except Clouds (1) and Aircraft (4) - you'd think this would be plenty low enough for a stutter free experience would'nt you?

And Yes, I've tried Ramsa's tips etc until I'm sick of trying them!!!!  Grin

Hi Bird man,

I was thinking of you when I was utterly blown away by my new pc's performance....... (CFS3 excluded!)

Your in for one hell of a treat! - considering your vastly better spec's than mine!

Good luck with CFS3.......  Roll Eyes

I don't really know what to expect! How much of a difference will 1.2Ghz more power than my AMD Athlon XP 2000 make? I guess ill find out soon! And how much quicker is PC3700 than PC2100?? Funny time to ask this I suppose................. 8)

I just pray thei 64bit thing doesn't make my computer out of date immediatly, but the amount of non-64bit computers that are advertised in the magazines are huge so they cant just go out of date overnight - ...................... can they Cry Cry Cry Cry

The sooner this thing arrives the better! Its driving me insane....... Shocked

He He, An out of date computer eh? sadly mate, thats just about every PC to leave the factory......

Considering most high end pIII's still run most games well, I won't be losing sleep about my new PC going obsolete - it no doubt already is!  Wink

Out of curiosity, did you notice any obvious heat being generated around the northbridge chip on the mainboard? I did when I o/clocked my p4 to 3gig. It was quite detectable just by placing a hand near the center of the mainboard. The monitors however were showing about the same temperature increase as you got.

Surprisingly, no! well, not to the touch anyway.....
Perhaps SIS chipsets run cooler than Intel? difficult to say without trawling some hardware reviews I suppose!  Roll Eyes

Then again, congo, I only ran it o/clocked for about 30 minutes or so, checking with Asus probe every few minutes, just to be on the safe side.

49dec @ 3.0ghz was good enough for me!  Shocked - Considerably  cooler than my old p4 ran at stock!

Paul.
