If you're talking about the AI aircraft like the MD-83, DeHavilland and the Piper, yes. Run FSEdit and open the needed aircraft. Under File, click Save As... and you can save it as a duplicate file to the one you opened. You now have access to that aircraft.

Don't forget to change the 'aircraft type' entry from 0 to 2 (or maybe the other way round - I forget) or else the plane won't be visible in the selection menu. Also you need to add a panel, as the default AI planes don't have them.

The simple answer is - DON'T. The prog has more bugs than an anthill.
Download AirED from the downloads pages and use that for changing the .air file - easier, and less prone to accidents! Change the .cfg file using Windows Notepad.

I tried it like that and I could not control the surfaces. More than that, it just crashed immediately on the ground! ???

If you still have problems - I don't recall whether they all worked that well - just write back and I'll email you the files.

The damage patch looks harmless enough but it will overwrite your aircraft.cfg files. If you have mopdified the stock files at all it's just as easy to do it manually.
You will probably want Massive Crash 2, too, a very nice free effects package

; I think the package includes the damage patch.
