Well, I usually am on the receiving end of the tipping, so when I do go out, I always tip well.  My minimum is 5 bucks, and I always tip at least 20% on anything.

I don't understand people who don't tip.  Especially at restaraunts where the people are getting paid not by the company (something like $1.50 hourly wage) but by the customers and their tips.  I have rarely encountered a waiter or waitress that wasn't any good, mainly because the way you are treated by them is directly proportional by how you treat them.  So if you treat them like they are some kind of subhuman (which happens more than you realize) they WILL be offended.  Remember, they are people too . . .

Depends how much you care about the family member, as to how well you want the surgery to go, oh and of course what you'll get in the will Wink Grin

That's interesting.  At seven months my son had to have surgery for a condition known as Craniosynistosis.  I'll spare you the gory details, but it basically entails removing part of the skull, reshaping it and replacing it.  The surgeon was one of the best in the country, and had previously performed the same surgery on several notable figures including the daughter of the French Consulate.  His fee alone was over $7000.  The interesting part is that while we were debating wether or not to do the surgery and getting second opinions, another doctor at the same hospital offered to do the surgery for free if the money was too much for us to handle.  I don't know if Dr. Vicari would have made the same offer, but I get the feeling he would have.  We never raised the subject.  This doctor certainly had nothing to gain by giving up his fee, and fortunately, we had the insurance to have the doctor we wanted perform the surgery.  But other than giving him a expensive bottle of scotch at Christmas, the idea of tipping never entered the equation.  And how expensive is the scotch?  Let's just say I could have bought a new TV for the same money...  Smiley

Pip, I congratulate you on your luck.  I cannot fathom the stress and suffering you endured, but I can sure understand the idea.

I don't think I can convey my condolences via the net.  It is incredible that you underwent this and came out as noble and happy as you are.

I sincerely hope that the doctor that performed the surgery is a lifelong friend of yours, because he surely deserves it.

My best wishes for you and your family, particularly your son.

Thanks Ender, I appreciate the sentiment.  We're not exactly lifelong friends, but he's probably going to be on our Christmas list for a very long time...  Wink  The man is brilliant with what he does and has pioneered several surguries in this area and others.  His name is Dr. Frank Vicari at Children's Memorial Hospital here in Chicago.  Recently PBS did a special mini-series on the hospital and he figured prominently in several areas.

Look here for details on the show

And for Dr Vicari...

Like others have said - I tip according to the service. If I get treated well & am happy with what I get, I tip. If I get forgotten about, get no (genuine) smiles, have to wait too long, am not treated as a valuable customer at ALL times - no tip. Period. I've had to argue several times with restaurants who added the tip to the bill. If that happens - any tip I was going to leave gets wiped & I won't leave until the zero tip bill is produced. & staff who don't make an effort to give customers a great experience should be fired instantly.  Wink
I'm a firm believer in customer service & those who don't bend over backwards to give it should be working in a backroom somewhere - not on the front line ...  8)

yeah its baiscally down to the service... if they expect tips then im more inclined not to give tips but if they offer good service and are not pushy etc then i always leave a few quid for them.. in the uk espec at some restaurants they are paid quite well anyways. taxi drivers i tend to tip a lot aswell if there friendly and efficent at getting to your destination.. i once offered this guy an extra fiver to get me through busy traffic as not to miss a job interview... 10 minutes later i was there as he knew every side street etc there was.
