This is my first post, as I just registered. I started as a newcomer to the sim world with CFS2 just over a year ago, was out of action for a few months, and just recently have been picking up the pieces and starting again. I have participated in two other sim sites, but when I found 526th_Fireman's information on tuning up the os, I was so excited about the info that I had to sign up!

So thanks very much for that tutorial, Fireman, because it's great! My os system knowledge is a beginner level and I sometimes have to consult with my two dogs about system issues....lol. The importance of your information is that it presents a concise and organized way of working through the myriad of hw/sw controls that can influence the sim. The video adjustments are something that puzzled me, so I particularily needed help in that area. I had always looked for some explicit written help on the whole matter.

Since I just started going through the process, I can't report the level of success, but I will. Time is a premium right now so this may take a few days.

In the meantime, this is truly an early Xmas present. Thanks again!

Thank you Jimko. Very kind words. I wrote that up as a help for all. Info I had gathered over time and from others. Time constraints, life changes, family issues and and new and lousy ISP and connection keep me from flying at the Zone as I use too. But I will return some day. I pop in now and then to see if anyone needs help.

I will tell you, and I think you will see lots of confirmation here, this is the best forum to belong too. The staff, Pete and his gang, maintain a GREAT site and keep it clean and informative. The people that frequent here, Hagar, Rollerball, Ozzy, 4 Series Scania and many many others are a deep well of info, freely giving of their time and knowlege. Most of what I learned came from here and through experimentation, and believe me, I really don't know half as much as many of the great people here do. I am knowlegable in some areas and a complete dummy in others. I like to say that I know just enough to be dangerous!!  Wink

I will tell you this, if you have any questions about your computer, the Flight Sim world or just about anything; post it here and it will get answered if there is an answer to be had.

Welcome, or should I say welcome back? And I hope the little tutorial I put together helps. At the very least, it will help you learn your machine and workings a little better, direct you to some great sites and give you some fantastic free programs.

Again, thank you for your kind words. In reality, the thanks belongs to many here who have helped me along the way.

I will give special recognition to Hagar. He has never failed to be patient and very knowlegable in just about any question I ever posted when I started out. I would suggest that you also read his tutorials here at simviation. That's where I and many others started.

Good luck to you and post away!!  Smiley

Thanks for the kind words Fireman but you're far too modest. I second Jimko's comments so the motion is carried unanimously. Wink

Keep up the good work my old friend.

Happy Holidays to everyone here.

Fireman, I'm very happy to report that the video configuration particularily helped me. I had a 1/2 inch strip down the right side of my 2D cockpit view (only that view) which was always distorted as though the pixels were screwy (?). The strip seemed to display a mix of sky and ground scenery; it was very strange. Panning to any other view corrected the problem. After setting the video controls, the problem is resolved, and I had tried different combinations before, but apparently not the right ones. The graphics are fantastic although I note that the frame rates are down. This may not be any problem as I have yet to check them when the action is hot and heavy. I can adjust at that time if necessary. The FPS run from 35+ to 120+ depending on the views and the activity, so far. I don't want to be a slave to frame rates, but with the old system flak and effects would drag them down to 5-6 FPS, a real 'freeze frame' effect.

BTW, my system (ATA32 report) is:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
     Service Pack 1
    6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1)
  AMD Athlon XP-A, 2166 MHz (6.5 x 333)
  Gigabyte GA-7NNXP  (5 PCI, 1 AGP Pro, 4 94)
        nVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400
      1024 MB  (DDR SDRAM)
   Award Modular (09/23/03)
        Communications Port (COM1)
        Communications Port (COM2)
        ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
RADEON 9800 PRO  (128 MB)
   ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (R350)
ViewSonic P225f-4  (42V031700335)
nVIDIA MCP2 - Audio Codec Interface
nVIDIA MCP2 - Audio Processing Unit (Dolby
   Floppy disk drive
ITE Disk Array 0 SCSI Disk Device
  AOPEN 16XDVD-ROM/AMH  (16x DVD-
LITE-ON LTR-24102B  (24x/10x/40x CD-RW)

It's nice to see that you are recognized for your work on this tutorial by your peers. Best of the Season to all of you. Thanks again,.....J

Glad to hear that your graphics got straightened out. You have a fine system and will/should handle CFS2 fine. I have found that understanding some of the settings of your Vid Card and then really spending some time and playing with them can of be great benefit. Everyone's system is different. You are using the same Vid Card that I do. You might want to check out http://www.omegacorner.com. Currently I am running thier drivers for my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. and so far I love them. They are tweaked drivers and offer a further option for SmartGart settings and turning off Fastwrites. Here, you can set your AGP. Turning off Fastwrites will give you a few more fps. I love these drivers. Up to you.

If I can help in anyother way, let me know.

And to Hagar. Modest? Well maybe. BUT truthful. YOU are far too modest my friend. But you know?, that's how most of the people here are. That's why I stay here.

Happy Holidays to you and all the great people here.
