Hey, what about The Longest Day?

It may not be about aerial combat, but it's good.

It was made at the time when Technecolor was common for movies. However, the producers deciced to make this movie black and white to give it that vintage feel.

This movie is about a soilder named Audy Murphey who became one of the most decorated war heroes of all time.

I think you're getting a tad mixed up Katahu. The Longest Day (1962) is indeed an exellent film with an all-star cast about the D-Day Normandy invasion. As I remember it was in full Technicolor.

Audie Murphy was an actor, poet & real-life war hero who became the most decorated US combat soldier in WWII. His most popular film was his own biography To Hell & Back (1955) in which he played himself. http://www.audiemurphy.com/

If you haven't read this book, you need to go out and get it NOW!  It should be required reading in every school.

Well Hagar pal, my video copy of the Longest Day is in B&W, but I have seen a colour version on TV before.
A Bridge Too Far is my favourite war movie. Hagar pal, I'm sure Pegasus Bridge was a D-Day objetive, not a Market Garden objetive.

I was going to say, operation Pegasus was a gliderbourne assult on a bridge in normandy that took place on june 6th 1944. I find it unlikely that they would have called the arnhem bridge "Pegasus" aswell.

You might have noticed I tend to get carried away sometimes & get my facts ever so slightly mixed up. It's my age you know. At least, that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it. You will be like it one day. Tongue ??? Wink

Does this mean they refilmed it in colour or simply coloured it in?

I seem to remember seeing a B&W longest day. But it was a long time ago and when I saw the colour version I put the B&W one down as being watched on a B&W telly...

Once you read it you'll know why.  The guy was a model of understated dignity.   Here's the official website devoted to him.  Not only did he win every single medal the US has to offer, he won 5 from France and Belgium.  He tried three times to get into the Marines who refused him because of his height and finally was accepted into the Army.  I can't explain the book.  You just need to read it...
