While watching all the hoopla about the surrender of the notorious Michael Jackson...

I noticed last night watching the news,  A Gulfstream taxi onto the runway, The question I had... The pilot was flashing his Taxi/Landing lights continuously while he was running down the runway for his take-off.

I'm just a armchair pilot but I've never seen this before, is this common practice? Is this just another precaution to alert other aircraft?

Also, the news helicopters has the place covered from the air, are the FAA regulations that lax? ie: you can hover over an active airport facility assuming your not over the actual runway?

These news guys are ruthless Smiley

flashing lights (actually, they dont flas, only dim) is easier on the bulbs and the generators -> less fuel use and longer lamp life.

most of that type of lights are Xenon tubes, which need a lot of voltage (15000V) to operate, when you cut the current, the gas keeps glowing for a while, and they switch it on after a set time... is easier on th power converter

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

As someone that lives in the land of televised high speed chases I can tell you the tv choppers were propably a good ways off. The lenses they have on the camers are incredible these days.
