Hello everyone!
I was just wondering if there are any airlines out there that are still using Boeing 707. I think there were a few back in 2000 or 2001 but I am not sure about now. Anybody know? It just intersting if any still use those, it's been so many years since 707 was introduced and launched, anyway, let me know what you think. Thanks

<G>  The US Air Force still uses a lot of them....

Most remaining civil 707s are used by cargo airlines.

Thanks for your reply.
Why is 707 being used for cargo thought ??? Isn't it a very old aircraft? A lot of airlines have moved to 767 or 747 for transporting cargo. Operating a very old aircraft isn't safe, well depending on how they maintain them thought. What do think?

If yoú're thinking of the "main" carriers, UPS, Lufthansa, FedEx, etc., yes.  But these old planes are less "complicated" than the newer all-glass etc., "systems"

You'll find a lot of these older airplanes in Africa, Southeast Asia, and to some extent in South America.  Many cargo airlines flying out of Miami are still flying the very useful DC-8s.  They're cheap, and parts are still available, plus they can get into places the bigger ones can't.

Check magazines like Airliners, Airways, Airliner World.  Frequently they cover the "other" side of the coin, in addition to the latest and greatest.

azerbaijan airlines has one for cargo, together with 2 727's. all ex pan-am.

Why the 707 is used for cargo... they are making too much noise to be allowed on the main airfields in europe and the US.

if you want to see lots of 707's (and Il-76) go to Ostend (Oostende) in belgium.

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

Thanks for your replies people, Interesting stuff you guys mentioned Grin Also researching a lot about 707 I also understood that most people say that Boeing 707 is not very comfortable for today. But what do they mean by that? I have seen some picture with quite comfortable seats in Boeing 707. Or is it because of the overhead bins that didn't have little door that you open and close when you put your luggage in? Anyone knows the answer? Thanks you people once again Grin

When the 707 first came out, the overhead racks were for hats, coats, etc., "soft" stuff.  Remember it was the height of luxury air travel - at the time.

I have NEVER found any airline seat "comfortable" - at least not after I broke the 225lb "barrier" ... suddenly the airlines started putting in narrower seats.

I don't consider that xxx airplane is more comfortable than yyy because, what you fill the space with can be "easily" changed.  Remember - the most people that have been carried on one flight is just over 1,000 - on an El Al 747 flight from Ethiopia.  I don't think there were too many people comfortable on that flight - considering they landed with 1 more passenger than what they started the flight with (a baby was born en route).

That kid has got the best answer to the "place of birth" blank on a job aplication ever.

Place of birth?First Class Cabin, Seat 5A, El Al 747, 30,000 FT above Ethiopia.

And what did they put on his birth record? LOL

Lol, that's intersting. When did that happen? Felix/FFDS, you mentioned about overhead rack on Boeing 707, I get it why they didn't have overheads bins with opening and closing doors but then where did all those people that were on a plane put their bags?

Grasshopper, "in the good old days" air travel was a formal affair.  There were no "carry on" bags.  People would actually use suitcases and such, and such baggage was carried in the cargo area.  The soft items, hats, coats, scarves, etc. would be properly placed in the overhead bins (also a great place for a cabin hostess to grab a few winks between flights).  Purses, businessmen's cases would fit "under the seat in front of you".  One would not think of carrying one's luggage into the airplane.

That's intersting Smiley And that would be sort of unusual if people would do that today. Oh and by the way, I have 3 more questions (sorry if I ask a lot of questions, I was just looking for those answeres since I started playing Flight Simulator). One is that how and why did EL AL put up to 1000 people aboard? I thought that the capacity of a Boeing 747-100/200 was no more than 530 people or so. How were they able to fit in a 1000 people??? Did they have like 5-5-5 seat configuration in the whole airplane??? 2nd question. Many times I read and heared and I just know that sound travels at 333.33 meters per seconds which means that if a jet exseeds a speed of 1000kph it is going faster than then speed of sound (1000/3=33.33). Ok well, on airliner.net I read that Boeing 707 and early Boeing 727 could travel up to 1010k or even 1017kph which means they could be going a little bit faster than the speed of sound. If so then how come nobody ever said they could go faster than the speed of sound? They were always called subsonic jets??? And the 3rd question is how come Boeing made 707 then 727 then 737, 747 and so on and then a few years ago they finally made Boeing 717???  Why did they miss 717 or named a Boeing 727 a 727 and not 717???? They sort of skipped 717 back then. Did they have plans for late 90's to build 717 or something? Any answers to these question would be greatly appriciated. Thank you!  Smiley

1. How to fit 1000 people in a 747?  It was one of the mercy flights, evacuating Ethiopian Jews to Israel.  (Read up on it - a branch of Judaism firmly established in Ethiopia).  They basically were put everywhere - two to a seat, etc.  It wasn't a "normal"  passenger flight.

2.  the actual Speed of sound varies with  altitude, air pressure, etc.  There is no "fixed"  speed of sound.  you have to qualify any "speed of sound" figure with at least "at xxxx altitude".  Also - are the speeds quoted absolute or indicated?

3.  The "original" model 717 was what the KC-135 was originally designated.  Boeing went back to the "missing" designation for the airplane born as the MD-95 after they took over McDonnell Douglas.
