Just wonderted which one guys preffered.
I like both, but the Lord Of The Rings is better. Tolkien has more depth in his writing, so to speak. I also like how he includes the "history" in it-especially in the appendices in The Return Of The King.

I never read the last book of Harry Potter or Lord of the rings (Or any of them)
Anyways, I heard that someone died in the last book. I would love to know, as I really don't care. But I'm sure some other people on here might. So could you P.M. it to me?
"Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," is going to be the best LOTR one to date. So when it comes out, I'll be there!

I don't think it is a fair comparison.
I have read both Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter (all of them) and enjoyed each one immensely. Lord of the Rings is not aimed at a young audience and that is evident in the depth of Tolkiens writing and his descriptions of both the characters and scenery.
Harry Potter on the other hand is not intended to be that indepth and is not aimed for older audiences.
I'll be indecisive like Ozzy and not vote!

LOTR of course. But you must count in 'The Hobbit' and 'The Silmarillion' also. The Silmarillion is IMHO actually superior to LOTR in it's depth, even if it is somewhat like reading a bible. It's also one of the hardest books I have ever read.

Agreed Pip, Silmarillion is bloomin' hard goin'. I only managed it on my second attempt, and I polished off LOTR (all three books) in a bank holiday weekend as a rather precocious nine year old.
I enjoy Harry Potter books, I'm not so sure about the films...
Basically I just love reading

yes i agree the harry potter movies did kinda destroy the pleasure of reading the books but the same cannot be said about the LOTR movies, which i absolutely love.
I've tried reading the Silmarillion but as you said it is very very very tough going and I think I might wait until i'm older to try to plow through it.

I agree. The Harry Potter books are much better than the movies. But the funny thing is, when I went to watch the movies, at least half the observers had not read the book, especially the younger people (U12). They kept asking there parents what happened in the book.
Why go to a movie that is based on a book if you have not read the book (excluding LOTR, which I understand is hard to read). My favourite book in the Harry Potter series is book 4.
Book 5 is not as well writen.

I voted for LOTR.
I have not read the harry potter books (although I own all of them), I did enjoy the movies rather much.
Some movies do not require the reading of the books in order to understand it.
However, after reading everything I could find by Tolkien, I would say that seeing the movie has enhanced my understanding and appreciation of the books. Tolkien is a masterfull writer, he has an appreciation for detail that most authors could never hope to attain. Seeing some of the extensive sets built and filmed for the LOTR movies has brought forth a great visual reference to the books.
Anyways, I think that everyone can figure out which way I voted
.

You're not wrong Kevin, after all John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was a professor of literature at Exeter College, Oxford. Britains premier establishment for lit. Ignore peasants who went to Cambridge
