I've just seen a Dell "Business Startup" advisertised here, on special for $899. 8)

No Brand details (I'd need to know exactly what I'm, getting before I even considered it), But it's pretty much what I've been pricing to put together myself.  Wink

My pricing tells me it will cost me about $500 - $600 in parts to build this, without the 17' monitor (which are about $250. So it looks worthwhile, at least worth looking into a little further.  Grin

2.6 Gb P4
512 Mb DDR SDRAM (that's exactly what it says)
64 Mb MX 5200 GeForce
40 Gb HD
17" Monitor
XP Home OP (I've got my own stuff anyway)
(It seems that everything is updatable, at least the case is!)
An it comes in that beautiful 'Black' that they have now! Grin Wink

Not bad, when I compare it to the price to build myself, plus the trouble I might have, as I've never attempted anything electronic in my life.  ???

But what is this DDR SD RAM. I thought it was either DDR or SD. How can it be both?

Grin Wink

I think you can assume that's a misprint, Professor.

It's going to be DDR RAM

I believe.. everything ('cept RAMBUS) since EDO RAM is  SDRAM..

The  "DDR" (double data rate) is the newer.. as opposed to "SDR" (single data rate)(PC100/133)..

so (unless I'm wrong) there are:

DDR SDRAM    &     SDR SDRAM

Here is a shot of the brochure I got in the mail. The 'Special' I speak of is on the front page, but here are some of the others.
They all appear to use the same term "DDR SDRAM".

So, I think Brett gets the cigar..............lol  Grin Grin

(I note they're getting cheaper and cheaper as time goes on, although all the graphics suck - taking into account that the $899 that I mentioned converts to approx $US600).

...

Thanks People  Grin Wink

As far as I learned it.......

FP = Fast Page
EDO = Extended Data Out
SD = Synchronous Dynamic
DDR =  Dual Data Rate

.....as for Rambus ?....I'm not up to speed on it 'cause I don't have a board to support it.....
