O.k I know how good Broadband is (having it myself).

But I see a problem. Shocked

I've probably got it all wrong, but here goes.

Surely if everyone converts from 56k (which I'm sure will happen in the near future) then this will slow down Broadband won't it? Doesn't this also mean that we won't be getting the speed that we originally pay for (£25 per month! Angry)?

Just a hunch.

I'm only smiling because they haven't found the bodies yet.&&&&

Hi Holder, basically the best analogy to think of is like a pipe with water running through it. The bigger the pipe, the more water.
Yes more people going to broadband can slow things down, but its negligble compared to dear old dial-up modems!
The biggest problem is servers the other end having enough speed. Sometimes I download planes from Russian sites (the Ekranoplan being a good example), and they are still using 26k modems on their servers. A 12mb file took 8 hours! Worth it when I got it though.

..slightly off topic but...
The mention of the word "Broadband" always brings to mind a Pop Group made up of ladies of dubious character... Roll Eyes...!

...or id it just me...?

LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Seriously tho'...
I have 56k, dial-up modem, Evenings and Weekends, with a two hour cut-off time....

The good points....
It's VERY CHEAP...£5 per month.... Grin...!
It stops me from being logged on and welded to my computer chair for 18 hours per day.... Wink...!

The bad points...
It's a "bit" slow... Cry...!
..(but means I can mow the lawn, do the hoovering, wash my socks and pants, (underware)....before logging-on later in the day).... Grin...!

Now Broadband is FAST, as well as being EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, and will negate all of the above.... Cry...!

So...
I'm sticking with cheap, slow, 56k, dial-up at the mo'... Grin...!
...and doin' other things with my life, like mowing the lawn, hoovering, washing my socks, etc, etc... 8)...!

LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Cheers all... Grin...!

seriously, i find broadband far too expensive currently, and where i am in Queensland I get really decent 56 K dial up speeds all the time.  I don't d/l excessive amounts of things so it isnt an issue to me.

Hi Poly.... Grin...!
...sorted... Wink...!
Unless your main interest is in downloading massive video and music files, then "expensive" Broadband is mostly a waste of time at the moment... Wink...!
My 56k dial-up is O.K. if I am prepared to relax and wait for things to download.....
...and it's CHEAP....woo-hoo...!

LOL...!

Cheers mate... Grin...!

Forget that!  Broadband also comes in real handy for downloading those 15 Mb planes for FS.  In fact, that's the main reason I got it.  It's not just that why I won't go back though.  Almost instantaneous page loads, quicker jpeg loading, and actually getting to watch a movie trailer is great!

The same thing has occurred to me. Not sure I like the idea of being permanently online either. In fact I don't like it at all. No matter how big this "pipeline" is, surely everybody using it at the same time MUST slow it down. Roll Eyes

Still, it's never likely to affect me. I'm quite happy with my old 56k modem. "What you've never had, you never miss" as the saying goes. Tongue Grin

Hi Michael.... Grin...!
Over this side of the pond, Broadband cost us £28+ per month, not to mention rental of the telephone line, plus call charges...
So, enlighten me please... Wink...!
...As a fourteen-year-old school-boy, how do you find the money to finance that sort of expense every month... Roll Eyes...?
Or do you get Broadband for free in the U.S... Shocked...?

Cheers mate.. Grin...!

P.S. or, do I suspect that it actually belongs to, and gets paid for, by Mum and Dad... Wink...?

Hi Fozz, It was my understanding that with broadband you didn't pay call charges ??? Im going to check this out. I also thought that broadband is strictly one user per line, we had to get in quickly here as there were only about 4 lines for 40 houses!!

Hi Bird...!
From what I gather...
...Broadband costs around £28 per month, plus the BT line rental of around £10 per month, plus the cost that little Johnny incurrs in 'phoning up his mates at every opertunity...!
...My Dial-up costs me around £5 per month payable to Freeserve, plus around £10 per month BT Line rental, plus any calls I avoid making make... Wink...!
LOL...!

Cheers mate... Grin...!

Foz. AOL are offering me (as a valued existing customer Shocked ) their Broadband package as follows.

Monthly charge: £27.99*
Modem cost: Free
Installation cost: No charge

This wouldn't cover line rental or connection costs from BT. I'm not sure my existing phone line is suitable & haven't bothered to find out. Roll Eyes

*PS. This includes connection to the WWW & unlimited time online, like my present account. My phone bill is low as I only pay for conventional phone calls.

Hi Doug...
It's the £27.99, ( £28 ), per month compared to my £4.99, ( £5 ), per month which terrifies me... Shocked...!

Don't get tricked by the "Valued existing customer" malarky.... Wink...!
Freeserve try that one on me to extract even more money from my Current Account at HSBC, (after the three months is up).... Cry...!
"Buggar off" is my instant responce.... Angry...!
...(You know me)... Wink...!
LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Cheers mate... Grin
Paul...(tight buggar)... 8)...!

P.S. isn't it a sod that you can't type a number eight followe by a closed bracket without it apearing as a "smiley face"....( £28 )...(£28)

LOL I'm well aware of that. You're not talking to some wet-behind-the-ears sprog. Grin

Just watch your phone bill. I figured out that my ordinary dial-up all-in AOL account is much cheaper than even the original "free" Freeserve. When I started out in this lark my first quarterly phone bill was astronomical & I couldn't afford to eat for a month. LOL Roll Eyes
