States Ranked: Smartest to Dumbest

The smartest state in the union is Massachusetts.

The dumbest, for the second consecutive year, is New Mexico.

These are the findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by organ Quitno Press of the public school systems in all 50 states. States were rated on a variety of factors based on how they compare to the national average. These included such positive attributes as per-pupil expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, student reading and math proficiency, and pupil-teacher ratios. States received negative points for high drop-out rates and physical violence.

How does YOUR state rank?

1. Massachusetts
2. Vermont
3. Connecticut
4. Montana
5. New Jersey

We don't do it by state or county over here.  Every year the goverment releases a massive league table with every school in the country on it.  Totally pointless IMHO.  A good student will succeed despite a poor school and "You can lead a student to learning but you can't make him think."

I'm surprised that California isn't on the bottom. The land of fruits and nuts.

If you look into American History(if you're so inclined to such boredom), you'll see that the North/South-smartest/dumbest connection, has existed since the early days. I think it has something to do with season.(ie colder weather/probably more inclined to stay inside and read) My wife told me about a study she read about in school, that stated, basically, the warmer the weather, the slower the brain operates! I can tell you that, without a doubt, driving in South Florida on a hot day......definitely NOT much cranial activity from drivers around here!

.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......

I think the scale has more to do with raw data, ie: test grades, report cards..........etc..    Basically put, it's a measure of the caliber of the students being dispensed from the CURRENT school system, not a judgement of the intelligence of the overall community.
