I sure do love it here at SimV, I visit quite a few other boards but rarely post on them, I just remembered why.
I stopped over at one of the fishing forums I keep an eye on this time of year due to the fall salmon runs, there is a rather immature and fairly intense arguement going on about involving snagging fish (which is illegal in Michigan), of course you've got the one guy who is defending the hell out of breaking the law, going as far as calling people names and making personal attacks on everything from their use of grammer to their personal opinions.
Now as most of you know, I always try to post comments that take into account the right of people to have differing opinions, I don't think I have ever directly blasted someone for having a different view of something than I do, I try to explain why I feel a certain way and accept the right of others to do the same.
So I post my view on the snagging fish issue, which I feel is not actually a sporting way to catch a fish, I also said that it is in fact illegal and therefore a true sportsman would abide and return any foul-hooked fish to the water.
The result was not pleasant! I was absolutely blasted by this fellow, basically being called ignorant and pretty much everything I said was attacked as being wrong and he tried to twist things around to make me look like a bad guy, just for voicing my opinion! And this guy is calling people immature because they think snagging is wrong, hell I didn't really even say I was against it, just that I thought it wasn't a very skillful way to catch fish.
Whatever!
The moral to the story is: I sure am glad I found SimV, at least here you can have differing opinions and people can discuss things like adults, most of the time if things start to heat up both parties are mature enough to drop the subject and move on and still be civil to each other.
Now I have been reminded why I spend 95% of my online time here and rarely post anywhere else, well, let's make that 75% SimV, 15% Ebay, and 10% elsewhere.

People like that are everywhere. Even SimV has had people like that. X, Kimber, and "Turtles In The Sun" to name a few of our former members you refused to abide by our rules. The major issues here in the past year have seemed to centre around these three people. (Actually didn't Kimber change her screen name to "Turtles in the Soup" at one time. "Turtles in the Sun", "Turtles in the Soup"... Humm... Perhaps they were the same person. ???)
Like I said, it's everywhere. Take my Dad for instance. He's president of the men's club at a local golf course. He and the members of the club issued a survey to see how people found the course and let's just say, the results were not in favour of the golf course management. They fired off a letter claiming that the survay was "unprofessional". Of course something like this is a constitutional right and they had no business saying that.
Then there's my flying club. I refuse to attend meeting of the club because of the bickering that often goes back an forth between the club executives and several members who are demanding change. In this issue, I side with thoes wanting change but I do not like they way they are attempting to go about it. I want to tell them this but I'd probably just be labled as a smart mouthed kid, which I has happend in the past to me at the same club. Unfortunately there is nowhere else to go so I just keep my damn fool mouth shut nowadays.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

So, what's "snagging" (rhymes with "shagging" but then that would be a nasty way to catch fish - you'd probably catch something else too)

lol, I see your point.
Bradh was the first person who Pete ever had to ban. A long time ago, atleast a year and a half ago, he got on the boards. All he ever did was start negative threads about the flightsimulator and then personally attack everyone and anyone who responded. I remember him attacking Doug, and then attacking us when we tried to either talk some sense into him or defending someone. It got pretty bad. Finally Pete gave him one last chance, and he blew it so Pete banned him.

"Snagging" a fish is using a bare, unbaited, hook to snare a fish. The hook could become inbedded in any part of the fishes body: mouth, gill, fin, tail, etc.
In true fishing a baited hook or lure is used to intice a fish to "strike", usually causing the fish to be hooked in the mouth only.
As I understand it, and to defend the act of "snagging" alittle, spawning salmon don't feed once they start their spawn, making it difficult to hook one. The salmon do become aggressive though, in preparation to defend their spawning ground, and will strike out at anything bright and shinny thinking it another fish.
P.S.: Along with Simviation I enjoy the forums at "Die Staffel" and "Sim-Outhouse". Although I like the topics at "Sim-Outhouse" I am not a member, they ask too many questions for me to want to register.

That's a pretty acurate description, also referred to as foul-hooking, this can also occur if a fish runs into a lure and gets the hook snagged into any part of it's body other than the mouth.
My whole point was that I really don't care if someone keeps a snagged fish or not, my point was that it's against the law and just not a sportsman like way of catching salmon.
Sometimes you foul-hook a fish by accident, the regulations say you must return that fish to the water, I say I don't care if you keep it or not, it's just going to die after it spawns anyway, but people who go out specifically to snag fish with no intention of trying to actually catch fish legally are not fishermen or sportsmen, they are just criminals who get public areas shutdown to legitimate law abiding fishermen, these are probably the same guys who leave their trash all along the riverbanks, also causing many formerly public areas to get shut down.
To give you another example of this guys reasoning, he wrote in his reply to my comment that it takes a lot of skill to catch a fish by snagging it and making it "look" like it was caught legally!
I reiterated by posing the comparison of this practice to going bowhunting for deer, but instead of actually using a bow and arrow, you would shoot your deer with a gun, then stick an arrow in the bullet hole to make it "look" like you could shoot a straight arrow.
I have yet to see his reply to my response, I'm sure it will be rude and obnoxious just as he has been to everyone on that board who does not support his defense of illegal activities.

Obviously his mother never told him if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. This soulds a lot like what Turtles did.

Thankfully I never had the "pleasure" to meet the first Brad. Brad "X" and his wife Kimber were just a couple of whiners. They really didn't understand how we go about things here and took too much the wrong way. I guess some don't have any sense of humor.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

I have not been a member very long, but thus far I have found a group of (sometimes) like minded people, who can rationally dicuss most any topic you can imagine. They also don't complain about both native Engligh speaking members, and those for whom English is a second language, making spelling or linguistic errors. I take my hat off to the whole community, and to Pete in particular, for setting such a good example.
Thanks Fido
