Why is fire fun? (Read 787 times)

As i write this message i am playing with a butane lighter and a pop bottle(i pump the butane into the bottle then light it).  I was just wondering why are people so amazed by fire. especially americans, who not only blow up things on the 4th and 1st of jan., but also at airshows, fesivals, sporting events.  my question is WHY.  people like me know its dangerous, but does that stop us-NO.

of course, fire has its scientific advantages.  just now i learned that butane has a higher density than air.

I learned this when i pumped the butane into the bottom, then flipped the bottle over and lit it.WOW. the result was a butane rocket!

Cub I think its a case of humans being naturally attracted to things that are dangerous or forbidden. When I was at school I succeeded in blowing up a chemistry lab quite well, all the glassware went, along with the windows, the table I was using, my hearing (for 4 days), and my eyebrows!
Top tip, don't play with fire, getting burnt really hurts Wink

Ozzy, your story reminds me off a boy in my class, who is not at all bright.  He and his brother where standing around a burn barel (if you don't know, a burn barel is basicly a old oil drum that us Americans use to burn our garbage.) in the middle of winter for warmth.  Before they went in his brother told him to put it out, and handed him a bucket of gasoline, and said here use this.  Well he pours it in and we all know what happens next.  Next day he's in school with small burns all over his face, no eye brows and a receding hair line.  We call him Burny or Boby now.  Although it was probably tramadic, and could of killed him, us kids still managed to make light of the situation.   Roll Eyes

Being a Pyro myself, fire fasinates me.  I think it's that it has so many uses and is quiet frankly, bueatiful.  Just think about it:  Fire causes chemical reactions in substances that change their chemical make ups! It has a give and take relationship with us.  It can give warmth to keep us alive, or to cook the food that keeps us life, but it can also bring death and destruction.  (My kinda thing.   Wink )  So I think we want to play with it and tempt death, to see how far we can go before it comes back to nip us in the butt.

Actually the truth of the matter is that I do like chemistry, and I did pass my chemistry GCSE, but I let my enthusiasm get ahead of my common sense on this occassion, and I read this book on making explosives, but I didn't finish the chapter where it went into great detail about stability of the compounds and safety procedures!
Once my parents had paid for the damage (my mum was livid), things got back to normal. My chemistry teacher encouraged my enthusiasm, but kept a close eye on me and helped me a lot, and my dad would always crack up whenever there was an explosion on TV and make comments about me spending the weekends on movie sets! I never really lived it down Roll Eyes

Being a self confessed pyromaniac I tend to burn most things I can. Over the summer holiday I burnt no less than three boxes of matches just for the sake of burning matches.

In chemistry lessons, we were rarely trusted with the bunsen burners. And when we did the teacher had to supply us with endless amounts of magnesium just so that we would set fire to the benches. And when we did the coursework on the combustion of alcohols, well, we unscrewed the tops off the little containers, removed the wick, poured the contents over the table or your friends stuff and lit it. Presto!

We've all read at least part of the anarchists cook book right? Grin

We used to only use gasoline to get our bonfires going real good, then once we were good and drunk we would throw cupfuls of blackpowder into the inferno, it causes an awesome !POOF! blinding flash and tremendous black cloud of smoke, lot's of fun.
One of our favorite things to do during our anual 4th of July bonfire/drunkfest was to throw whole grosses of bottle rockets into the fire at once, they would shoot everywhere, if you ran away and hid you would be called a sissy-boy (or more offensive equivalent) by those of us who were brave enough to stand our ground, not very smart now that I think about it, but great drunken party fun!
Of course it goes without mentioning that we would always have a fart-lighting contest at everyone of our drunken gatherings.
Hmmmm......fire.....getting drunk....there seems to be a strong connection in my case, now that I don't drink, I also don't play with fire anymore either...go figure.

Fire Is my favorite thing to play with  Roll Eyes. I think I may know why it exploded and just burned. It exploded because it was starved of air, when it sucked air in through the mouth of the bottle it came in in a rush causing the fire to expand rapidly and "Explode". in the times it just burned did you only pump a little in? in that case it would not be as starved of air.

What can I say? I'm a pyro!

I've done my fair share of playing with fire. I even almost burned a couple houses down. They were small fires but thankfully I got them out Embarrassed

I even once almost started an electrical fire by shorting out an electrical cable in my bedroom Roll Eyes

But since then i've stuck to playing with explosives outside Grin

Ok...... when it comes to playing with fire..... now you are getting into the stuff that I do in my real world job.  Grin  I get to play with fire all the time..... BIG fires ........ and no one yells at me for doing it.   Wink  Been doing this as a pro for about 34 years.

I am a professional ceramic artist....... a potter.  I fire my work in a large Japanese-type multi-chamber wood fired kiln called a "noborigama".  The firing cycle is about 28 hours of constant stoking to bring all of the five chambers up to the roughly 2400 F (white heat) maturing point of the clay and glazes I use.

I burn about 2+ cords of wood a firing.  I burn pine scrap from sawmills 'cause it releases it's heat faster and I don't cut trees just to fire the kiln.  At the peak of the firing, when I throw wood into the main firebox on the front end of the kiln........... I can put 5-10 feet of flame that looks like the afterburner on an F-15 out the top of the chimney that is a good 35 feet away  Wink

Then the kiln takes about two days to cool before I can unload the pots.

I understand the facination with fire quite well.  Along with the effects that wood firing gets on the wares that can't be gotten any other way...... I really enjoy the entire wood firing process....... from cutting and stacking the wood..... right up to the stoking.

My $0.02 worth.

best,

....................john

Oddly enough the largest explosion I ever made was from an exploding 2,400V 400uf capacitor! not from fire. The band was so loud that I could not hear well for a few days and books fell of of my shelf because of the shockwave.

I love playing with fire!

In a job I used to have I would work in a lab testing road marking materials, quite an industrial process...

Out in the yard we had this weird looking machine. One day, I asked what it was..."Thermic Lance, you want a go?"

THERMIC LANCE? That sounds interesting!!  Grin

Basically, it's a large Oxy/Acetylene torch that "burns" an Iron rod in pure Oxygen to produce extra heat...think of a Oxy/Acetylene torch with afterburner. Boy does that thing get hot...really hot! 4000 degrees C hot!!

We cut through all sorts of stuff with this, concrete melts when you use one of these things. We cut through a 9x9" rod of steel in about 20 seconds!!  Shocked Shocked Shocked

If you even get the chance to use one, do, it's one hell of a blast!

fire is so fun and i dont know why.  ive always been fascinated at it and been amazed at for how many hours one can sit in front of a camp fire and just stare at it.  it must be something descended from down cave men days when they first discovered fire, it provided warmth and light in a world that would have been cold and dark.  and that fascination has carried through to today where we just literally get a bang out of seeing things blow up!  i know i sure do!

I dont mind fireworks displays, but I prefer the soft glow of candlelight. My girlfriend and I tend to burn candles for light instead of turning on the incandescent ones in our home. Much more soothing

As for explosions, I can take them or leave them. Im not impressed either way. Guess since I dislike guns as well Wink

You can't just keep flaunting that thing around and threatning other Simers. By order of the UN, I put an Atomic Marmalade weapons ban on you.  Grin

I think the reason we're facinated with fire is because we're all a bunch of idiots. Let's face it, no other animal goes screaming down the highway at 100mph in a rusty1990 Dodge Caravan, no other animal ties a rope to their feet and jumps off a bridge for fun, no other animal jumps out of a plane for the heck of it. I'm sure you can see my point.

I'm guilty of being dumb too. I used to burn treated wood and mounds of old paper in my fireplace. I violated several environmental laws when I did that.  Grin I have a natural gas fireplace now so I can't burn things.

A friend of my Mom's house burnt down several years back due to faulty wireing. Seems the switch box was defective, overheated, and caused the wall it was mounted on to smoulder. The brand of box they had has many problems and is usual only seen in industrial settings. My Mom worked for Federal Pioneer Electric (not the brand in question) for a number of years and knows a thing or two about these boxes. The box had been installed by the previous owners, a do it yourself job. All the electrical in my house was done and checked by my uncle who is a professional electrition. Never try and install something like that yourself. The only thing more dangerous than fire is an electrical fire.
