After spending a number of years using flying simulators, and having to set-up, and observe, various weather conditions before and during flight, that when outside, I now spend a lot of time reading the sky above me, cloud formations, wind direction, temperature, humidity, etc... 8)...!
A fascinating subject which seems to be completely lost upon other people around me... Cry...!
A look at the sky will reveal some amazing, ever changing, cloud formations, and it is interesting to try to identify the various types of clouds.... 8)...!

Has anyone else suddenly found an interest in "Weather" since using Microsoft flight simulators...?

Cheers all... Grin...!

P.S. I have been returned to my feet a number of times by passers-by, after being observed lying flat on my back looking up at the sky*.... Shocked....!

LMAO Fozzer the intoxicating fluid!

In COF I HAVE wondered about weather like you have and give a note to self to learn a bit more but never get around to it. It is a great subject, a lot of things go around our sky we don't even know and now COF makes it just like that!

Keep it up man it is a great subject. Maybe you would like to share a tip on COF how to stop something new in the weather?  Wink

Summer Wx in south Florida can be very dynamic, to say the least. I think we have a lot more convective(thunderstorm) Wx than you have over there Fozzer. I can, without a doubt, say that you are not alone. I used to work line service with a shift of 5 other guys. During summer afternoons, we would wait for the thunderstorms, as a group, to roll in, right on schedule. It's amazing to watch a cumulus buildup so big, that you can see the movement of the top billowing 4-5miles above your head. We we're all student pilots, and quickly learned things like, mares tails at high altitude overhead, indicated a coming cold front. I made the mistake early on, of trying to impress my family with my newly learned Wx knowledge, now they always expect me to FORECAST the Wx.  Cheesy

Hi Paul, yup I'm interested in the weather. Dates back to my Air Cadet days and taking a meterology exam aged 15!!! My wife is always amazed by how accurate I am compared with the weathermen on TV (yup Hungary has its own Michael Fish Grin).

Mark 8)

PS. Reading the weather well is not just a useful pilot skill however, its a vital biker skill (e.g. do I pack the waterproofs Grin)

Hi Mark Grin...!
Definately a biker skill.... Wink...!
Towering, heaped, Cumulonimbus at low level, and rapidly lowering pressure, means it's going to p*ss down with rain very soon, so don't get the bike/plane out... Cry...!

It's quite amazing that in a small, General Aviation, aircraft, you have to be so careful to observe the weather in your locality, and the weather during your route, and the weather in your intended destination.... Shocked....!
So many pilots die, failing to observe these simple observations....!
If you are not happy, then stay on the ground... Wink...!

I've always found weather to be quite interesting, I used to love to track hurricanes when I was younger.
I live about 20 miles east of Lake Michigan, that large body of water can have drastic effects on the weather, especially in the winter when we get pummeled with 'lake effect snow', which is much heavier than a typical snowstorm.

Hi Paz... Grin...!
Very interesting mate... 8)...!
My County of Herefordshire lies to the east of the Welsh mountain range known as the "Black Mountains".
As the prevailing rain-bearing winds arrive from the west, the wind forces the clouds higher over the mountains, which then generally fall out as rain before they reach us.
Not so good for the people who live close to the "down-wind" side of the mountains.... Cry...!

This results in a "temperate" climate for us Herefordians... 8)...!

Cheers mate... Grin...!

Good Day Paul.
I would say also that I "notice" the weather myself alot more. Just yesterday while I was driving home, I looked out over the water to see a bright blue sky with tremendous white puffy clouds. The sun was setting so they had a tint of pink to them. You could actually see the "bulk" along with the depth of these humungous clouds. I immediatly thought how impressive it would be to fly through them!  Wink

Hello Dave.... Grin...!
Actually, those towering white puffy Cumulus clouds are aviators worst nightmare, and to be avoided at all costs.... Shocked...!
The billowing, (and the anvil at the top), is caused by VERY strong up-draught winds, rain, and ice crystals, and will cause serious structual damage to small, (and big), aircraft.... Cry...!
If you spot one of them in front of you, take immediate avoiding action and definately don't fly beneath them... Shocked...!

...beware of pretty clouds...LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Cheers Dave... Grin...!

Like Ozzy I learned meteorology while in the ATC. I was quite good at it too although I've since forgotten most of the technical stuff like specific cloud names & so on. Yes, I do know the difference between Cumulus & Stratus & can spot a Cumulo-Nimbus when I see one.

I started being more aware of wind & weather when I became interested in RC model flying some 23 years ago. I still love looking at the sky with its constantly changing patterns. I reckon I'm as good at forecasting weather as that twit Michael Fish any day. I still don't know how he had the brass neck not to resign in 1987 but that's another story. Roll Eyes

Doug, he did get sent away for a year for re-training, odd that within a week of his return to TV we got hit by another hurricane. Do you think Mr. Fish is a weather phenomenon?

Well, I think the man is incompetent & a complete fraud. In any other job he would have got the sack. That's wot I think so there. Roll Eyes

If anyone is wondering what the heck we're going on about check this out & watch the vid. http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/october/16/newsid_2533000/25332...
I was right in the middle of that lot & was scared out of my tiny mind. At one point I thought the whole roof was going to lift off. My 60 foot long x 6 foot high garden wall ended up in the neighbour's garden. If anyone had been near it they would have been killed outright.

That's what I thought. LOL
This idiot had previously made fun of a worried woman who rang in enquiring about it. If you watch the vid from the lower link you can see what he actually said. I was woken by the strong winds & so worried I went downstairs to listen to the radio. The weathermen were still saying, don't worry it's no more than a gale. Well, they obviously hadn't bothered to look outside as I was there & knew the difference between a 60 mph breeze & a full blown hurricane, (Apparently it wasn't technically a hurricane as it was in the Northern hemisphere.) Then there was a blinding flash & explosion from the nearby substation as the power went. No more radio. I spent the next few hours in candle-light strumming furiously on my guitar in an effort to drown out the sound of the storm. There was a brief lull which I imagine was the eye passing through & then it started all over again. This time I knew almost exactly what I was in for. I half expected the chimney to come crashing through the roof at any moment.

This was the most frightening experience I've ever had in my life & that fool never had the grace to apologise. If it had happened during the day I dread to think how many people would have died as a result of his incompetence. Angry

I have the greatest respect for you guys in the US & other countries who suffer from this sort of thing regularly.
