Singer Matthew Jay dies
Jay had toured with Starsailor
Singer-songwriter Matthew Jay has died after falling from a seventh-floor window in Nottingham, where he lived.
The 24-year-old up and coming singer was widely praised for his debut album Draw and had toured with Doves, Starsailor, Stereophonics and Dido.
In a statement, his parents said: "Matthew lived and died for his music. His family loved him dearly, admired him greatly."
The circumstances surrounding his death are not known.
The statement said it was not thought there was anyone with Jay when he died, on Wednesday, 24 September.
It added: "We hope that his music will live on and help fill the terrible void left in all those who loved him."
Matthew's genius was an inspiration
Martyn Watson, manager
Jay's parents were avid folk musicians and he joined the family band at a young age and grew up in Abergavenny, in South Wales.
He was often compared to fellow British singer-songwriters such as Badly Drawn Boy and Nick Drake.
A spokesperson for the singer told NME.com: "Everyone here who knew Matthew will remember him as such a lovely guy, and a very talented artist. We are deeply shocked and send our sympathy to his family and friends."
His manager Martyn Watson added: "Matthew's genius was an inspiration. He brought light to all our lives and his songs will live on forever. All his friends will miss him so much."
