Here is a post from this time last year, 2003. I thought it was appropriate.

Well today is September 11, 2003. I watched some TV this morning on the memorial. Here in New York, the weather is the same today as it was on September 11, 2001. Bright sunshine, a few white, puffy clouds in the sky, and a calm breeze.  The names of the dead were read aloud by children. It was pretty moving. To some of us, Sept 11 does not mean much. It is understandable. Being so far from it, the events of that day can sometimes easily be swept under the carpet. But for many of us, I for one who lost 2 friends in the attack, it is a hard day. One was a NYC Firefighter who was killed when Tower #2 collapsed, and the other was working in Tower #1 on the 86th floor. As most of you know, I do alot of freelance photography.
I did some freelance photography for a firm the days after the attacks. I was given full access to anywhere at ground zero I wanted to go. I have over 500 photos of the aftermath.. I met many people in the days that followed 9-11. The Firemen, the police, the volunteers, the mayor…….
It was amazing to see with all the destruction and carnage around us, the willingness of the human spirit to keep pushing on.
I thought I would at least share a few pictures I took from ground zero. I had a hard time this morning looking through them.

Here are a few photographs that I took.

Here is one part of the landing gear on the corner of Murray St and Broadway. It is from the American Airlines aircraft that hit tower #2. The location where this wheel assembly landed is 3 blocks away from where the World Trade Center stood.

...

Here is one of the engines. It landed a block away from where the landing gear fell.

...

This shot was taken at the base of where Tower #1 once stood 2 days after it fell.

...

This shot speaks for itself. I finally understood why firemen consider each other family.

...

This is 7 Word Trade. It was heavily damaged when the towers collapsed "onto" it. It fell over later that day due to the heavy damage and fires burning in and around it.

...

In this shot, I was able to jump up ontop of a Con Edison Utility truck. Do you see the "gold Ball" in the lower center? This was a monument that represented the World Financial Center. It sustained heavy damage but was still standing.

...

Here is the same structure a year later in a park near ground zero as it was the day it was removed.

...

Some color among the darkness...

...

One of many memorials I stumbled upon that week.

...

Today was highly remniscent as well.  The weather has been identical, I had the same class first today that I had two years ago, the same class in which I heard the news.  Today, just like 2 years ago, there was the beep of the PA system, the same aprehension, the same news, the same prayer.  I also went down the same road I did last October, which is way out of the normal way of things.  And last night, I stepped outside to the sound and sight of F-16s headed off...

Cry

Here is a peice I wrote a year ago today, recalling the morning of two years ago today...

Even though it was a year ago to the day, I can still remember that Tuesday very clearly.  It is something I wish to forget, but it will remain with me until my death.
It was a beautiful Tuesday morning, the date was September 11th, 2001.  Everything was going as usual.  Towards the end of religion class, an administrator came on the public address system and had us pray, for at that time, "all families and victims affected".  No one had any idea as to what had happened, though I suspected a plane had crashed at the local airport.  After religion class was over and I was at my locker, I asked my friend what he knew about the situation.  He had been in computer class and had been able to go to CNN.com.  He told me that a 747 had crashed into the Twin Towers and another one into the Pentagon.  At the time, I did not even know what the Twin Towers were or where they were, though I had a feeling New York City.  At about the time I entered Spanish class, the second airplane hit the second Tower.   A couple minutes later the Spanish teacher told us that one tower had collapsed, an airplane crashed in Pennsylvania, and a plane had smacked into the Pentagon.  What was going on?  How amny more planes will crash?  After we checked homework, we turned on the television about 40 seconds after the second tower had come tumbling down into a heap of debris.  Everyone was awestruck.
For the rest of the day, we did no work.  All we did was watch, awestruck, as history unfolded before our eyes.  I remember the social studies teacher telling us the Towers' rubble would burn for days and that it would take months to clear the rubble.  A student asked her if this mean't war, and yes, she said, war was probable.  In math class, we had the television on.  I can clearly remember watching two F-16s from the 174th Fighter Wing(the same wing tasked to shoot down FLight 93, but it crashed shortly before they took off) lift off from Hancock Field, which is right here in Syracuse, armed with missiles to go patrol New York City.  Schools closed early, some classmates with FDNY relatives or relatives that work at the Towers began crying.  My uncle, who has visited the Towers many a time said he could not imagine how the towers, massive and strong, could have crumpled like tin cans.
I think in a way, remembering that fateful day so vividly helps me.  It helps me to remember all the lives lost.  Hopefully, I will be able to recount the story in the years to come, I don't see how I could not.
Now, as the 174th is back on Combat Air Patrol, two F-16s scream over my house each night en route to New York City.  When I hear that unmistakable scream of the jets and rush outside to see them, I can't help but think of that first night they flew over for Combat Air Patrol, the night of September 11, 2001.

Amen. Embarrassed Cry

I was in 11th grade (during 2nd period) when word of the terror attacks spread faster than wild fire.

At first, I thought its was just a random fire incident. However, the primitive side of my mind quickly told me that this is no accident. There were tell-tale signs when I saw the live camera image displaying the north tower that was in smoke.

My suspicions were immediatly confirmed when the south tower was hit minutes later.

I was quiet until my english class (2nd period) was over. When I arrived at my 3rd period (JROTC) class, all my friends were starring at the same live image on the television set. At the same time, questions were popping out like fireworks.

Moments later, my JROTC teacher (Army Instructer) was on the phone. He later hung up and said that the Pentagon was just hit. Everyone was in greater surprise when they heard this.

I kept my eyes on the televised image until my eyes almost went red. My mind was processing all the information so fast, I barely spoke. However, my mind was processing more info at 10x its max speed when I later saw one of the towers CALLAPSE!!!!!

I then heard one of my friends saying a lot of things. When I asked him "what heppened?", he told me that he knows some relatives that work in the towers. Words can never describe the feelings I had when I heard him say that.

However, his relatives were not working at the time. It's seems to be their day off.

Then, news has spread about the 4th crash. This crash is in Pensilvania in the wooded area.

When lunch hour came, after 4th period, I went to the cafeteria to see further news on the terror attacks (there are several television sets hung from the ceiling). But when I got there, it was packed. Everyone was huddling around near every TV they can find.

As I kept my eyes fixed on the TV, my mind began to think differently. The civilized side of my mind was quickly overtaken by the primitive side of my mind. Then, 2 words surged through my head: REVENGE and WAR!!!!!!!!!

Just like the terror attacks at that day, these words had also surged through the minds of many in both America and other nations that where emotionally affected very deeply.

This all reminded me of that first movie The Matrix. You wake up from a deep dream (a thousand fathyms deep) only to see a nightmare.

I will never forget September 11, 2001 and how  first heard about the attacks.

These attacks has awaken us all from a very deep slumber. From this day on, we must never go back to sleep again. It could happen again, or worse.

To put this all in perspective, I have this to say......

I was at work that day and as usual, we were listening to Howard Stern.......we did that for the comedy he provided to us, but on that day, we heard a very different Howie........not the smartass guy who thrives on controversy.........he almost came to tears as he stayed on the air describing the sight before his eyes.....along with everyone in the US, we all felt the pain that day......... Undecided

Dave, I hope you don't mind, but I "stole" your shot of the firefighters as my wallpaper for both work, and home.  It's an amazing shot that really describes EVERYTHING that day.

Thank You everybody for your "responses". Alot of the pictures you see in the papers are black and white and are printed so the public can look at them without the true sense of what really happened. I will collect some more over the weekend and take Pete up on his offer, (Thank You Pete).

Thank you once again to the flight sim community for all the support shown on 9-11-2003.

I just found this today (because I just saw the post from Fly2e at fs2004.com)

Here's a copy of the reply that I posted at fs2004

I use to live about 10 miles give or take from the towers. and I knew a few of the firemen that went there that day... none of them returned from that day... everyone somewhere had a loss that day. I have been working on a flash file with a lot of photos from that day that I was sent... I have to reinstall Macromedia flash in order to finish it... but once I have finished it, I'll put a link to it here... those photos were sent to me a week after the crashes.. and I have been putting it off finishing it..... it's just a hard think to do when you loose something from home as well as people you knew.

I live in England.

I was just coming out of my class and walking up the hill to our technology block when I heard someone run up to his friend and say something like the world trade centre has been bombed. I didn't believe it and carried on up the hill.
As I walked into the technology block the TV was on and I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I didn't take in what had actually happened I stood there non-plussed. Over the next hour or so as I watched the two towers crumble out of existence it dawned on me the reality of this.
I didn't talk to anyone the rest of that day. I didn't go to any of my lessons. I sat and thought and watched. I still didn't know what to think. I was scared of war. I had no idea who had done this. I knew Britain would be involved and was scared of it being brought back home.
I guess you could say I grieved that night. I felt a strange emptyness. Sort of a sad nothingness. I'm not particularly religious but I can admit that I found some solice in thinking about God and the universe.

I didn't talk much for the next few days. Undecided

I missed this topic when it was originally posted for some reason. As it seems to have been revived I would just like to say how moving those photos are to me, a stranger from thousands of miles away. A unique record of a terrible event that even now I find hard to believe. I can clearly remember seeing the awful images live on TV as it took place.

The fact that the weapons used were the civil aircraft I've dedicated my life to made it even worse. Machines intended for the good of mankind being used for destructive purposes. It made me feel sick inside (& still does) to realise that things had now changed for ever & I couldn't bring myself to touch my PC or do anything much for some time afterwards. I fondly remember my visits to NYC & a trip to the top of one of those towers in happier times. Thanks Dave for posting these photos.

Last night I watched a program on the History Channel about the war of 1812, and realized that September 11 is a day to remember for many reasons.  Mainly the focus being that our freedoms were attached.

After the dust settles, the Red White and Blue always flies high and proud. Grin

Truly incredible images. If you are going to put these up on a website, i'll offer my services to design a website to hold all these images. If you are interested, please PM me. Once again tho, INCREIBLE images. I myself as a photographer wish I was there that day to document this event in images, and I hope that doesn't sound morbid or sick, this event truly moved me when it occured.
