FS2002 Pro comes with the GMAX program somewhere within the fs2002 folder.

Good downloads to start with are any 'plane that takes your fancy.  I wouldn't start with any of the other addons just yet.  find out what the basic program can do, you'll then appreciate what other things can do for you because you have a frame of reference.

First of all, welcome to the wonderful world of Flight Sim!

Second, welcome to the SimV forums.  This is a great place to come and get any bit of advice on almost anything to do with the sim, and a great place to hang out, otherwise.  Check out the Cafe for some good times . . .

Third, Gmax is a design program that works great with FS.  There are several others out there, but Gmax is included with the game, so many people have learned how to use it.  I suggest not messing around with it just yet.

I would also suggest doing what Smoke2much said and getting used to what aircraft are included with the sim, then start delving into the downloads.  There are thousands to choose from, and finding the right ones when you don't know what to look for is impossible.

The main difference between the Pro and Standard versions of FS is that the Pro version comes with a few other aircraft that the Standard version doesn't have.

Happy Flying!

Okay, with that solved, now I'll welcome you to SimV as well.

This really is the BEST F$ site on the net, and you'll soon find out why.

The people here are more than just simmers.  They actually care about the other members...as much as can be expected via the internet, of course.

If you've ever got any questions, F$ or otherwise, you can always post here.  99 times out of 100 you'll get a response.

The other great thing about SimV is that people really don't care if you're a newbie or a veteran.  We've all been new at some point.  (As long as you're not an a$$.)

As for GMAX, I wouldn't screw around with it just yet.  It's definitely best to learn F$ first and then toy around with the extra stuff.

It's an amazing world, this thing we call sim.  Enjoy it.

If you still have any doubts this site should explain the differences.

http://www.microsoft.com/games/fs2002/features.asp

It sounds as if you have 2002 Pro.  If not, you can download functional equivalents of the missing aircraft from SimV.

GMax is a developer's tool.  If you're a novice you will have little interest in it unless you want to jump right into aircraft design.  I saved some HD space and deleted the entire folder.  Plus, it's out of date.  You can get a better version free from GMax - not sure of the URL but a Google search will surely find it.

Good point about GMAX, I only mentioned it because I am 100% sure that it isn't on the standard edition.

Welcome!

Doesn't the program's opening splash screen say 'professional edition', over the picture of a default Jumbo? Mine does.

Not sure...I'm usually out of the room when the splash is up.  Based on the fact that he's got Gmax, I'm guessing he's got pro.

He could also list the aircraft he's got in his hangar...another surefire way to tell.

  Welcome aboard,
Kinda depends on what you want to make it into really, are you into flying airliners between cities? or do you just want to cruise around in a small plane checking out scenery?
You can pretty much customize FS2002 however you want, check the downloads section here at SimV and just flip through the pages to see what is availabe, thats how I got started, now I have well over 300 aircraft, several great utilities, I don't know how much extra scenery and it is almost entirely freeware, so you can download it and add it to your game, most are very simple to install and usually come with instructions.

If you have any problems, there is always someone here who will help you.
