I just finshed reading Robert Johnson's book Thunderbolt! and I must say, it's the best book I've ever read.  It is the definitive book on the P-47 and its pilot.  Even if you don't like the Thunderbolt, read this book.  Johnson's description of air combat are so detailed, every controll movement and every action are described in great detail.  One moment in the book stands out in my mind:  During a bomber escort mission to Berlin, Johnson and eight other pilots raced after forty plus Fokker-Wulf 190s attacking the first box of sixty bombers.  The Fokker-Wulfs went right through the giant formation of bombers followed closly by Johnson and his comrades at more than 400 mph!  At such a speed they would have passed through the bombers in a matter of seconds, but he describes every cannon hit, the explotions of rockets, bombers falling form the sky, and damaged bombers falling out of formation smoking engines and leaking fuel tanks.  If you havn't read this book, and you have even the slightest interest in air combat read this book, Thunderbolt! by Robert S. Johnson.

It was originally published 15 years after the war.  It has been published and republished many times over the years.  First in 1959, then in 1961, then 70, then again in 71, and in 73, and in 97, and finally in 99.  It was published by the Altamn Printing Co., Inc.  If you like I can give you the names of other books concerning the air war in Europe during WWII.  Many others about the Pacific war, the war in general, and many books on the differnt airplanes from WWI to WWII and inbetween.

Hey Sock,

You sold the book to me!  Grin Grin Wink

Problem is, my local bookstore is having trouble finding a reference under the name, title or puiblisher.

I'm in Australia, so it may not be available. I can try one of the larger retailers in the City, but my 'book man' tells me all I have to do is ring them and quote the ISBN number. It's the computer 'bar coded' number on the book (provided it was printed in the late seventies or after)

Can you give me that number?

Thanks  Grin Wink
