Albany International Airport made aviation news again yesterday when a Northworst Northwest Airlines 757 en route from Detroit to Boston made an emergency landing after reporting a myriad of problems with the aircraft.

First problem.  Loss of hydraulics on left side of aircraft.

Second problem.  Loss of left reverse thruster.

Third problem.  Failure of steering in nose wheel.

Somehow, the pilot was able to get the airplane on the ground, stop it (though he used the full runway) with no flaps, spoilers, or reverse thrusters, and taxi to the terminal with no nose steering....

I want THAT guy up front on every flight I ever take!

That is one hell of a fine piece of flying. I hope everyone brought him a drink afterwards. Just shows that training saves lives.

I think a good portion of this "save" can be attributed to good old common sense........the training never hurts to have, so you know what you can do, but with that in mind, you use your common sense to tell you which  things are still possible with the available tools still at your disposal.......good on ya, Captain !  Shocked you deserve the left seat !  8)

let me guess it was flight 852 anchorage to detroit to boston.  ive taken that flight.  but went to fort wayne indiana insted of boston.  if it is that flight then i probably had the same pilot.  he realy knows how to bring a plane in nice and soft.  if it wasnt for the bumps on the runway you wouldnt have known you were on the ground.

Pilots bid for their line every month, so unless you took that flight in July, chances are it was a different pilot. Wink

Challenge time!!  I want to see if anyone can do this landing in FS, without crashing or drifting off the runway.  If you can, you get a Bad@ss Award!

I'll bet that cockpit was reeeeealllllly quiet during those last few seconds! Shocked

BTW, Hyperion.  Do you know which runway it was?

I suppose its for the pilots sanity!

Consider this:

Would you rather fly from New York to Paris in one day or Dallas to Atlanta twice a day?

I don't know for sure, but I think that's the basis for the bidding.  Those who want a couple of long flights with plenty of time to sit and do nothing during or those who want to be flying constantly throughout their workday can choose their flights.

Its pretty much the choice of the pilots, but there are probably a couple of flights that everyone wants to fly, so those flights are up for bid.

I have absolutely no idea on this subject, but this is my best guess.

Pilots bid every month on a series of flights, which are called "lines".  Each line breaks down which flight you're taking, what plane its on, etc...

You bid based on your seniority.  At Continental, and I'm sure most other airlines, flight crews bid the number of their seniority.  For example, the #1 pilot or F/A only had to bid one line, since, as most senior, they were obviously going to get it.  #2 bid 2 lines, #3 bid 3 lines, etc....You bid them in order of preference, and you get the highest line (preferred routes) you're the highest bidder for.  (Make sense?  Probably not.)

There's really no logistical reason for this.  It's more of a benefit than anything else.  It allows you to go to places YOU want to go to.  Some people have no interest in going to Alaska, others have no interest in going to Paris.  It's nice being able to choose your routes.

The worst part is when you're a newbie, and you're on "reserve".  This means that you don't bid lines.  You're basically sent wherever the airline wants you.  (Not sure about pilots, but in CAL, the reserve F/As sit in the crew room on "Airport Alert" days...you sit there for four hours and if the phone rings for you, you go where they send you.  It can be exciting and adventurous, or it can be boring and lame.  It's never the same thing twice.)

That's bidding in a nutshell.  lol  Not an easy process, but one worth the effort, IMHO.

It happened on Tuesday of this week, so like three days  ago, whatever that was.  lol  Not sure about the flight.

With NW hubbed at DET, they've got tons of flights to BOS.
