After going to all that trouble I thought losing the aircraft like that smacked of incompetence.

One of the people working on it died because of hypothermia

And that ex-stuntpilot who had the idea of doing it probably wanted it televised anyway.
The guy is best-known for the low-altitude speed record he broke with a modded F-104 launched from a truck with RATO tubes.

Still they made a big mess of the B-29 they found... it burned away while it was in a good condition (engines messed up because of the water but that was almost all the damage) and it should have been preserved as a monument or shipped to a museum instead of being 'fixed' and flown to be used for scrap parts anyway(in the worst case)

Check into Daryl Greenameyer and you may be surprised..........sure, he did a bit of stunt work, but his flying skills come from more than just being a show-off in an F-104..........

Hagar,

I too saw the Enola Gay When it was stored at the Silver Hill restoration facility in Silver Hill Maryland back in the mid 1970's.

My Dad was given two tickets to the opening of the NASM for a small bit of work he did on the P-40 NASM had at one time, it was later loaned to the San Diego Air Museum and was lost in the fire.

But Dad did take me to the night time pre opening event at NASM when I was about 13 years old. One of the most memorable events in my life.
