Will. I believe the fire that destroyed B-29 "Kee Bird" was caused by a temporary APU in the rear fuselage breaking loose from its mounting. They used it for heating the aircraft interior due to the extreme cold. It was left running while taxying. This was nothing to do with the main power plants or fuel lines.

If my mind serves me right, They were only getting the
bird out so they could sell it! Profit was their only
goal and the world lost a part of history!! I was
so damn mad after watching the TV show about it
I could SPIT!!!

I agree X. Don't forget that one of the team also lost his life. Cry
After going to all that trouble I thought losing the aircraft like that smacked of incompetence.

One of the people working on it died because of hypothermia

And that ex-stuntpilot who had the idea of doing it probably wanted it televised anyway.
The guy is best-known for the low-altitude speed record he broke with a modded F-104 launched from a truck with RATO tubes.

Still they made a big mess of the B-29 they found... it burned away while it was in a good condition (engines messed up because of the water but that was almost all the damage) and it should have been preserved as a monument or shipped to a museum instead of being 'fixed' and flown to be used for scrap parts anyway(in the worst case)

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

Check into Daryl Greenameyer and you may be surprised..........sure, he did a bit of stunt work, but his flying skills come from more than just being a show-off in an F-104..........

Because of the possibility of opinions being 'passionate' and the likelihood of a 'hot argument', the entire subject of whether or not the decision to use the 'bomb' was justified (be it morally, militarily, legally or spiritually), is best left alone

Thats why I didn't comment.

Go right ahead and say your piece, if you wish.

When I say 'best left alone', I of course, am only referring to restraint on my own part.

Far be it from me to advise newcomers (or anyone else for that matter) of what could and has happened over far less controversial subjects as this.

As I said, be my guest...........say whatever is on your mind.  Grin Wink

Hagar,

I too saw the Enola Gay When it was stored at the Silver Hill restoration facility in Silver Hill Maryland back in the mid 1970's.

My Dad was given two tickets to the opening of the NASM for a small bit of work he did on the P-40 NASM had at one time, it was later loaned to the San Diego Air Museum and was lost in the fire.

But Dad did take me to the night time pre opening event at NASM when I was about 13 years old. One of the most memorable events in my life.

100th post for me!
