I don't know if anybody in here is from NY, or is affected by this new law, but if you do you now they keep uping the driving age.  First they it was permit at 15 and licence at 16, now its permit at 16 and licence 6 mouths later.  And now I hear that they're uping it more.  You get your permit at 16 and wait 3 years until your 18 to get your licenece.  From what I've heard this goes into affect at the end of the summer, or winter for anyone in the southern hemisphere. (but that won't affect you so don't worry about it.)  I'm 15 and it seems they are changing the law everytime my birthday rolls around, so I have to wait longer.  j/k.  But the whole point of a drivers licenece is to get away from your parents.  When your 18 your recognized by the government as a adult and have no reason to get away from your parents because you can legally move out.  But whats interesting is they are not uping anything else. (besides test standerds, which I'm grateful for.)  The drinking age in NY  is still 21, although that doesn't stop anyone.  And you can get your glider licence at 14 and your power licence at 16.  I think flying is a bit more difficult and dangerous, but much more fun!  But I can't fly myself to school.  I'd like to hear all your opinions on this.  Do you think it's good, bad? Let me know.

i think its a very good idea, no offence meant but kids shouldnt be allowed behind the wheel of a car till they are at least 17-18. i have on my numerous trips there seen 15 year olds driving some really fancy sports cars and SUV,s and they were driving way to erratically, then a group of kids in one car driving in the fast lane at 45mph, not getting out the way of other faster drivers.

I will admit that us kids have a less than perfect record on the road, but I think we are just ignorant and self-centered, and it shows that in our driving, but with practive it gets better.  And a year or 6 mouths of practice is good!  Besides if you don't let teenages out at that age they become aggresive and angry.  There will probably be more road rage than ever.  The kids angry at each other, the government for making 'em wait and there parents.  Also lets not forget you older foke, who are gonna be yelling at us kids!   Cheesy  As for the the 15-year-olds with SUVs and sports cars, I don't know where they get the money, or if they just steal them from they're parents...As for me my dad bought a '95 Ford F-150 with a standerd trasmission to teach me how to drive.  One day, if they stop uping the age, it'll be mine, and it's a lot better than any sports car!   Grin

In Britain you aren't allow to start driving until 17, and I agree with this. You can ride a moped at 16 but that is about it.
I remember what I was like at 16. And I was not good driver material, v.moody, and intolerant, come to think of it I still am Grin
I actually learnt to drive age 8 in Australia on my uncles farm in Australia (a Massey Ferguson tractor), and was riding the Honda motorbike all over the place aged 9.
I was lucky Grin Grin Grin

in the UK the age to aply for a provisional licence is 16 and full is 17, and I've been waiting on mine for 2 months yet one of my mates got it after a week Angry.
What really p***** me off is that I can afford a car and insurancebut not the running costs, or the insurance and the running costs but no car Angry. Even once I can afford all 3 I'll have nothing left to do anything which defeats the purpose of having the damn thing Angry.

i am only now starting to learn to drive and i really have no interest in doing it, its money i could be saving to take flying lessons instead.

Craig you should really learn to fly.  It's get fun, much more than driving.  I got about 10 hours under my belt, and should have more than enough experience to solo next year!  You need 10 hours to solo here in the States, how many do you need on your "side of the pond?"

i've got a few hours of flight personally but at about $150 its just not a viable option right now, and as for solo hours you need 20. like i have said before there is a good chance i will be moving to the states in a few months anyway, so good cheap cost cut there:)

Well I'm 17 and I'm more scared of other drivers than myself. Today two people cut me off at a light. I honked my horn and they just waved back and sped off. I went to a defensive driving school and they told me NEVER to pull a trick like that. One, cops will get you if they see it. Two, you could get into an accident. Well after they waved I followed rule number 3 they gave me... Extend arm vertically, extend middle finger vertically... I wonder if airliner pilots do that if they get cut off on the taxi ways LOL

Actually its only 2 years, not 3.

I live in NYC for 4 years now and I remember that these age limits were in effect before i even moved here.

So wat u heard is not true, because they made all these changes more than 3 years ago.

In Ontario, we have a graduated licence system. At 16, you can apply for your G1 level licence. This is basically a learner's permit and you must be accompanied by a licenced adult while driving. If you take a driving course, you can apply for your G2 level eight months later. It's one year if you don't. Under this level, you may drive by yourself but blood alcohol must be zero while driving. One year after that, you can apply for your full G class licence. There is no difference between the G2 and G except you are allowed up to 0.08mg of alcohol in your blood. I personally think you shouldn't be allowed to drink and drive at all.

To answer Andrew, I started driving just after my 17th birthday more out of need than desire. Ontario's roads are really bad and there are very few polite drivers around here. I'm fairly nervous behind the wheel. Some guy almost hit me once. He had is indicator on all the way down and decided to go streight through the intersection at the last minute. I was turning in the opposite direction to what I thought he was. He actually started to speed up when I was turning!  Shocked I gunned it and nearly had a heart attack afterwards. As a side note to this story, Ontario's main freeway, the 401, is the most dangerous highway in North America.

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday. Russ that can't be true!   Shocked  My brother got his driver's permit in January, and is going to get his licence  tomorrow.  I think thats just for NYC, everyone keeps telling me I can't drive into the city till I'm 17 or 18.  And I did mess up I said it was 16 to 18 with a permit and then you can get a licence, but I put 3 instead of 2 years.    Tongue

If you really want to analyze this situation of drivers, whether they be young, old or the same age as you, gender included,... there really are only three kinds of drivers in the world........

1. That guy's (or Gal's) drivng wayyyy tooooo fast and out of control, and shouldn't be allowed on the road......

2. That manic is gonna causes an accident by driving so slow, like that.................idiots like that should be taken off the road.............

3. And then comes the final class of driver....................
................
             ........................
                              ................................
YOU !

................think about it next time you critisize someone else's driving.......... ???  ???  if you have never said #1 or #2, then you are the most perfect driver in the world !
