The FS2002 ATC just tells you to enter downwind or whatever leg in the pattern when you're flying VFR.
When flying IFR, however, they then vector you in for the ILS landing.. To fly under IFR, open up the FS2002 flight planner, check "IFR" .
I'm not at the computer that has the sim on it at the moment so I can't check up on that, but I believe that pretty much answers they "how to get vectors" bit..
Keep out of IMC in VFR,&&Tim

Sandesh,
If you file an IFR flight plan starting and ending at the same point, ATC will guide you through the flight. Only trick is that you have to choose GPS routing. The flight planner will not allow you to use other routing methods for this kind of flight.

so how do you get the airplane to know where you are going with IFR? Can somebody help a hopeless newbie??
I figured out how to do the flight planner, but I cannot figure out how to get the airplane to control itself without setting the autopilot and changing the heading when the ATC tells me to. Isn't there a way to let the airplane do everything itself and have it land? can somebody help me do it??

To fly an IFR flightplan, you need to specify it as IFR in the flightplanner. You need to learn how to navigate to know where you are going.
And no, you're not a 'hopeless newbie'. We were all asking the same questions at one point

It is possible to couple the autopilot to the GPS which will keep the aircraft of course if there isn't too much winds, but you're gonna have to do the rest of the flying

Ok, I go to flight planner, select my flight, select IFR, hit OK, then start the flight.
Now what do I do?

Once you have filed an IFR flightplan, get on the radio to get started, they will tell you what to do

I did that, but I get some weird number that I cannot figure out where to put it in... I think it's the departure frequency or something.
But how do I get the airplane to know where to go? Do I set the navigation to NAV and thats it?

Not for nothing, but aren't you basically just turning your PC on and off? lol
My advice to everyone in this situation is always this:
You're sitting at a table. The man in front of you is eating lasagna. Is this going to satisfy you?
Take some of the smaller planes up and learn how to navigate, you'll be much happier.
Great edit, Bob.&&&&&&Google it. &&&&
