Hey, I am new to Gmax and I have downloaded aircraft's paintkits so I can repaint them. The problem is I have no idea how. Can anyone tell me how to paint in Gmax??

You cannot use Gmax for editing existing aircraft. Use a standard graphics editor like PSP, Photoshop or one of the free graphics editors to edit the textures. Pixia is a good freeware graphics editor. It's posted in the SimV design sections. Almost any graphics editor/paint program will do to start with. M$ Paint can be used if you have nothing better.
You willl most likely need DXTBmp here.

This tute might also help.

I can paint in photo finish but the textures are showing up black. I have DXTBMP also and they will show up in that but not in my painting program.

You most likely didn't save the repainted textures in the correct format. Save out using the DXTBmp "Save Extended Image" option to convert them back to their original format FS cannot read 24 bit images. Please read the tute from my link carefully.
