I play this game called Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2.  Whereas in many games you can play roles, (soldier, pilot, tank commander) in this game you control entire armies.  I was going to get the next in the series (Command and Conquer: Generals (there's air-air combat in it and it's in 3-d)), but I thought, "what if there's a world War II game like this?"  And that's my question: Is there a World War II strategy game?  Here's a shot of the game I'm talking about:

There's the Close Combat game series that's real time strategy that are lots of fun

I've played various turn based ww2 stratagy games, but it pisses me off when a whole marine platoon is just feet away from a japanese position but can't even toss a grenade because it isn't their turn Roll Eyes Undecided

If you have the Yuri's Revenge expansion, it's called Tsunami, if you don't, you can download it from the Official RA2 site, same name.  I'm making a map called Tsunami II, it'll be the same style but for 8 players.  I can send it to you if you want (after I finish it of course!).

Theres a great new game out called Blitzcrieg and you can play as either Allies, Russia or Germany. It covers all major events in world war 2 and air support plays a pretty big role. very stretegic good game.

The Close Combat series is the best out there for WWII real time strategy. I have Close Combat5 and I find it great fun when I want to outsmart someone.

Just for the record, CC1 is Normandy, CC2 is Arnhem, CC3 is the Russian front, CC4 is the Battle of the Bulge and CC5 is Normandy again.

I've played CC3,4 and 5 and 3 and 5 are the most entertaining. CC4 is quite annoying because the germans always have f**k off big tanks when all you have is a couple of bazooka teams.

Ooh, air support! Cheesy But that just reminded me of something, specifically to Woody and Crumbso, do any of these games have air-air combat?  That was pretty much why I was moving from RA2 to Generals.

But is there any air-air combat, in Generals you have all these F-22s, F-117s and MiGs.  Heck, you can even call a B-52 to drop a daisy cutter! Shocked Cheesy Grin But I think this would all be so much cooler if it were P-47s and Panzers. Sad

Yep there is air to air fighting and the air support gets better as you progress. you start with hurris then move on to spitfires then finally meteors. You can call in spotter aircraft for the artillery (very very important in this game the artillery can decide the way the battle goes.) Bombraids ground attack aircraft, para drops. I think its a great game.

Close Combat5 has airstrikes, morter barrages and navel barrages. There is no air to air combat though.

I seem to remember a role playing game called Panzer General3D that had air to air combat... However the planes seem to hover and only move when ordered. Its not very good.

Generals is a good game though. Even if the aircraft are a bit vunarable. Even the B52's are bound to be shot down by a man with a machine gun.... Tongue

I have played the Panzer General series for years and still own all of the different versions of the game.  PG 2 is actually much better rated than 3 was and is much more intuitive to play.  The maps are much better, the units move easier and look better.  The thing to remember about the PG series is it is turn based strategy, not real time like Close Combat (which I also play) or Red Alert 2.  It is closer to a board wargame than a video game at all.
