Well yesterday I went to a USAF recuiter, and decided I'm going into the USAF enlisted. (Don't worry its still a year off before I join up.) I think I'm going to apply for...

Jet Engine Mechanic
Fighters (Tech)
Bombers (Tech)
Intelligence
Avionics

I get five choices that I pick to put on a form. The one i most want to the one I least want. If a posistion Isn't availible for the first one, it goes down the list and so on and so forth. I'll be coming out of basic as a Airman First Class A1C (E-3) because of my JROTC training. After two years automatic promotion to Senior Airman SrA (E-4). Look at the dormitories enlisted personnell get  http://www.afcee.brooks.af.mil/dc/dcd/arch/enlisteddormitories/pdf/figure_5b.pdf

I THINK he said the F/A-22 rocks. In some stupid text format that someone created so people can pass notes in class and the teachers couldn't decipher them.

Thanks guys! I was looking into the USMC also but I saw that the Air Force offered more and I'd like to work on aircraft. When I join up I'll still be here, albiet not as much, and using FS and all my other games also. I'll have high speed internet I'm sure at most stations I'm at. But if not I guess I'll have to pay for a 56k conn  Angry. If the airforce will allow it. But I'm sure they have high speed internet in all the dormitorys. Most everyone will have a PC with them I'm sure. I'm pretty sure the USAF is the only service that allows you to bring your PC to the base with you, all the other services I don't think you can. You see this is what my dream is. To work around the biggest and the baddest aircraft the world has and still use my PC, so that means I can still design planes! But at a MUCH MUCH lower pace than now. Due to the USAF's needs, and deployments etc.

Before you sign any thing, make sure you are guaranteed the job you want. DO NOT go general and let the AF decide where they want you. If you can not be guaranteed DO NOT SIGN!! You seem to be a very bright kid, and if you are smart you will have mom or dad tag along just to double check. When he says you are guaranteed an engine mechanic , make sure its for a plane and not a truck.
In 1983 I went in guaranteed in security thinking police work. I did not notice that at the time there was two types of security. Security Specialist and security police. The recruiter hosed me in to guarding missles and not police as I though it was.

Dont count on getting a dorm room like the one you linked to. That only one base.

Thats my piece of advice for you.
IMHO, you have made a good desision by going in the military, and a great choice by going into the USAF.
Good Luck Erik

The recruiter told me that every base now has those dorms. Yes my Mom and Dad are going in next week to talk about it. Also you can't just signup as mechanic. I'll be as a Jet Engine Mechanic, or Bomber/Fighter Technician, Avionics or Intelligence. Its changed since 1983, now I choose when I want to go to basic once I graduate, and they don't let you do general, you have to choose the feild you want to work in and then you sign a contract. I won't sign anything till I'm guaranteed. I have looked around and yes the USAF since 1992 has been upgrading all of their dorms on every permanant base to this status, either small housing like those. Or in large buildings but with the same layout.

The thing that worries me the most is that when I run, I get some pain in my side. I'm not sure If I can run the 2 miles in 18 minutes, but i'm definently gonna try to work up to it. I've got an uncle who was some sort of technician in the Army who had polio in one of his legs, so he didn't have to march.

Also, do you get weekends off in the Air Force?

Sure, like you would really see me pop in to see what  basic training is like Grin

You may think that i'm just saying these things because you're going in. You could ask anyone in my family and they would tell you i've been seriously thinking about it for quite a while.

LOL not you, Wolf is also named Andrew, he lives in Houston  Wink When I went to the recruiter they asked me if I had any injuries or broken bones etc etc. For me right now I can't do 2 miles in 18minutes. I can do a mile in a little under 15 I think, but after 6 weeks in basic I should have no problem then. I'm gonna work up to it this summer, running down my street everyday.

the first two weeks i was dragged around 2 miles, on a relitavly flat course, the 3rd week i was then took on a 4 mile run and then 6 mile for the final few weeks, my dad was in the army at the time, and as i was looking flabby he decided to take me out running with him thats how i first started, i was given certain maximum times i had to achieve  and i would usually get something if i did, and being younger at the time the prospect of money for doing that was rather appealing, the first few days i could barely do the two miles, even my fat little dog was out running me:) but once my legs were used to it and the initial pain was gone it became alot easier. the thing was i was given specific distances which meant no real option but to do it, not like going one day 2 miles and then only 1 mile the next, as that doesnt work. all i can say is dont decrease what you run. but dont over do it either, once i was able to run long distances i pushed to hard and tore my MCL and ACL. i have only run a few times since.
Ozzy's recently taken up running he may be able to give some good advice

good luck:) best way to do it is start out on a mile run, if you still feel after the first mile you can go further do it, for the first few runs set yourself a time to achieve but dont worry to much about it, then once your fitness is improved always aim to beat it, even if that means crawling through your front door after your done:) and believe me i have done that a few times:)
Good luck

A mile in 3:58!

The world record is 4 something! Shocked

I can do a mile in about 8 min and I don't regularly run...I should though but I find other ways to stay fit.

Best of luck, Erik, but I would never, ever enlist.

USAF hard as the Marines, I pitty your military basic intelligence. LOL Just joking. its 90% class time 10% physical. They mostly do mental stuff to get you psyched up for it. But the Marine boot camp is 13 weeks, compared to the USAF's 6 weeks, USAF and Marines are like two opposites. If I went into the Marines I'd die lol.

So am I, USAF basic is 6 weeks, USMC basic is 13 weeks. The recruiter said they don't really care if you can do it under 18 minutes, just that you can do it, and that it can be improved. Oh and they do want me hehe, I've gotten called from every service, including the USCG to join up with them. I got a 50 on my ASVAB test... Armed Services Vocation Aptitude Battery. Only me and another person im my entire school PASSED that test. About 30 people took it. 47 is the national average so they want me for my smarts hehe. Not to good in math, but I excell in Mechanical and Electrical working. Two weeks ago the USAF called and said... "Mr. Haaland, would you be interested in the USAF. I have looked at your ASVAB scores and they are very impressive. Have you every considered working on military aircraft?"... It goes on from there. He showed me a bunch of stuff on aircraft avionics and engines. So I think thats what I might wanna do. It also gives me a chance to sit and work in the cockpits and everything else on the worlds biggest and baddest flying machines. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT!

I was wondering about this but having no interest in athetics I didn't like to say anything. All I can say is that if you can really run a mile in under 4 minutes maybe you should consider a career in athletics.  Wink

From what I can make out the world record for the mile stands at 3:43.13.
It was set during the GOLDEN GALA - Rome, Italy on JULY 7TH, 1999 by Hichman El Guerouj of Morocco. I'm not sure the mile is still considered an official distance.

Because of the huge amount of publicity I still remember the first official "4 minute mile" - 3:59.6 set by Dr Roger Bannister on 6th May 1954, ancient history to most of you. Coe wasn't born then & didn't get his record until almost 30 years later. http://kajaks.celier.org/wr_progression/men/mile.shtml

thats the one, i couldnt think of the name for some reason coe was the first into my head ???
i was being considered for higher level athletics untill i tore the ligaments in my knee, after that i just lost the passion i had for it, same for soccer and cricket. its funny really, just after i tore them i thought it wasnt anythign major as the pain wasnt that bad, i was in training for a cross country championship race for my high school, my gym teacher refused to let me even  try and train, he just said try the bleep test for a few levels and see if i could get past 5. got to the end of gym on the first bleep turned and that was it, i knew he was right. i am trying to get it back now though, as i have become to lazy

The test must be taken before entrance into the military. It helps in placement in a field that you would likely do good in.

THANKS loomex!

Andrew... You can take the ASVAB during 10-12th grade of high school, or administered by the armed services. Talk to your guidance counseler about it. I scored so high because my dad is an electrical engineer. I've been around electronics and machinery since I was born. I know alot about it, and I scored very high on the test. I'm going to take in next year once again, and try to get 51 or 52!

Homeschooled eh? Well if you're 17 go to your local USAF recruiter and talk about it. Yes while in the USAF I am planning on going to college. They pay full tuition so I get three pluses.

1. I get to work on something I like.

2. I get to go to college for free.

3. Maybe go into pilot training  Grin

Congratulations Blade you are making a wise choice the Air Force is a great way of life.  I've been in the Air Force for almost a year now and its been one of the best years of my life.  You are going to meet some people in the military that are going to be flat out asses but don't let that get you down because there's always ten nice people for every ass hole, there will always be someone there to help yeah when you really need it in the Air Force were like a big family.  Hears the only three things you need to know about BMT at Lackland.
1.) Don't speak in less asked a question by a “TI”  an then you answer back with “Sir trainee (so in so) reports as ordered” YES sir, NO sir, YES mama, NO mama...
2.)  “Don't drawl attention to your self” by doing something dumb like leavening water in your canteen at night wile you are sleeping because someone will give you a free bath with some really cold water wile your sleeping.
3.)  Eat soft foods in the chow hall because your not going to get very long to eat (5min if your lucky).

Hears some bad news for yeah we do exercise a lot in basis so start doing push ups now and start going out running two miles every day  they want to know how far they can push you before you brake an believe me you  an your body can put up with a lot of shit.  My flight did 800 push ups one day because the “TI” was trying to get the point across that he was going to be our O mighty God for the next six weeks of our life.  BMT isn't hard so keep your chin up and an just let the BS go in one ear an out the other.

As for jobs sine up for one at MEPS or you will get the jobs that no one else wanted if you go in open general.  Get everything in writing an ask as many questions as you can when you go meet with the job counselor at MEPS ask about bones an what's the wash out rate of the Tec school an how long it is.  I went to Tec school in Pensacola, FL an had a blast it was great but you cant play around an not study the Air Force is known for having the smartest military members an there's a reason for that, our jobs are so high Tec that is not even funny.  My job is Aircraft Structural Maintenance an I have so much responsibility word cant even describe it, I am what makes that aircraft fly with out me the aircraft are paper weights.  I live in the dorms on base so if you want I can take a pic of my room so you can see what one of the dorm rooms look like, an yes the air force does have a higher livening standard than the rest of the military meaning we got nice rooms an every thing else.  If you have any questions fell free to ask me I wont feed you any BS I know everything your going to need to know to make it throe Basic.  P.S. I build aircraft I SUCK AT SPELLING!!!!!!

Pilots in the USAF are in a class of there own.  There not like the every day officers.  You need a four year degree from a college  to become a pilot its as hard as that... Grin  Sucks A? An yes you do hafe to take a test to fly an for a hole lot of uther BS...  I have the MGIB so after four years if I want to get out I can go to college an all most everything is payed for, but im takeing college classes right now for free thanks to the AF...

Pipeline?  This is how it works BMT you will live in open bays, then at tec school well most of them will be dormitorys not open bays where you will share a room with 2 or three people with a bathroom that is connected with the room next to it, when you get to your 1st base if your not marred you will move into the dorms on base(that is what my pic's are of) if you are really lucky you can get a room with your own bathroom like me Grin or as a even better plus your own bathroom with a really big room( I have a small room but its bigger than a dorm room at any college)...  Enjoy this is half of what the AF is known for...

I bleave you will have about 30 classes they were revising all the classes wile I was there, you will be given a book called a "Basic Military Training Manual ll or lll) it will go over things like the uniform code of military justice, Dress an appearance, STD's, human relations an so on.
The 1st week suck ass because you dont really know whats going on yet but after that you start picking up really fast on how to play the game.  Learn your ranks an E grades now because we have this thing called "memory work" an if you dont know it your going to get yelled at. your going to take a PC E-Vale your 1st week to see where you need work(like push ups, sit ups, 2 mile run( I was told they were trying to make the time 15min you had to be done in).
Your 1st four weeks is all most all class room work, your forth week you take a test over everything you have learned in your classes ( its not hard so dont work your self up about it) an you will also take your last PC E-Vale (your two mile run, sit ups, push ups, this is the one that counts you want to run your ass off) your 5th week is the most fun "Warrior Week" your plastic M-16 thats right plastic M-16 will become the biggest pane in your ass you ever had.  Every ware you go you M-16 goes. in your fifth week you learn everything that will save your life you learn about how to work a gasmask how to hold off an enemy force thats trying to take controle of your camp an so on, theres to much to write.
6th week is prety layed back your mostly doing out processing so you really dont have to much to wore about.  All in all BMT is not that bad I had to try really hard not to laugh at the "TI's" most of the time because most of the things they said was funny as hell......  Oh yeah an if your recruiter didnt tell you this we have this little thing called being recycled which means you can be in your 6th week of BMT and get knocked all the way back to your 1st week an do all the BS over again most recruiters leave this part out, it all comes down to how bad you want to graduate BMT if you do everything by the book an when they tell you to you wont have any prob's at all there going to keep on telling you that the fastest way out of Lackland is to graduate an there right.  Just to let yeah know you spend more time in BMT folding clothes an working on makeing your wall locker look nice that its not funny about 85% of the time not funny!!!! Grin

Medical Waiver I think? If you don't pass the last PC then you get recycled back 1 or 2 weeks and try again until you pass it. I plan on passing it the first time.  Smiley

Rise early. It is the early bird that catches the worm. Don't be fooled by this absurd law; I once knew a man who tried it. He got up at sunrise and a horse bit him. Wisdom teaches us that none but birds should go out early, and that not even birds should do it unless they are out of worms.- Mark Twain.

I think that settles that matter then! Grin

Blade,

I have just read the thread from top too bottom.  Good luck mate.  If the USAF is anything like the British military you really need to get in writing what Job you will train for after basic.  Remember that once you sign on the dotted line and put your right hand in the air and read what is on that card they own you in some ways.

This two miles in 18 minutes business shouldn't faze you, for most reasonably fit people it is possible to jog/walk two miles in about 20 minutes.  When you take the tests they will have been working on your fitness and endurance for some time.  Also remember that these are the minimums required and that you will be taking other tests at the same time.  Over here the Royal Marines have what is generally acknowledged as the toughest "basic" final test in the world.  By this I mean it is the minimu required to be a basic Royal Marine, not a member of a special forces unit.  Each of the tests could be passed by a very fit person individually but there are lots of them together and the last one is a thirty mile forced march...Ouch.  When you do the training remember to be the best that you can be, how you perform in basic training will have a bearing on the rest of your career.  If you and another person of the same rank and with the same qualifications apply for the same job/posting they will look for something to distinguish the two candidates.  If you pass out of basic near the top of your "class" (flight, troop, squadron) you are more likely to get it.

Best of luck mate, I wish you well in your chosen career.

If you ever get posted to the UK give me a shout, I live about ten miles from two large US airbases.

Will

Ok sure I'm sure I'll look everyone up if I'm ever stationed in the UK. Yes I'm going to get a contract stating which job I want. With my ROTC training I get an automatic promotion to E3 (Airman First Class), while anyone without ROTC in high school gets E2 first. The recruiter told me that with my prior training I should become a squad leader or something else high up in our flight.

From what I've read the dorm cheif is the oldest person in the flight. Also if you are one of those people, and there is trouble in the flight, you get the heat from the TI's, so I think the risks outweigh the rewards here  Wink

Good luck Blade, I hope you get far in you career in the Air Force.

Thats a nice looking room N505AF. I guess you can tell that U.S puts a little more money into the military compared to most militaries. But I really dont know much.

I hear in Germany, once you're done your "high school", you either do a year of community service or join the military for a bit. The German military even has a placing for people who wants to join but refuses fight (or take part in any combat training).
