I figured I'd put this question in here since it really is general discussion.

I almost bought IL-2 Sturmovik today because I saw it real cheap, but then I thought, 'well theres all that cool stuff that I could download for one of Microsofts combat simulators,' but then again I thought, 'yeah but, it'll end up like FS2002 and I'll hardly ever fly because I'll always be downloading stuff.'

  So heres my questions:

How does Sturmovik compare to Microsofts combat sims?
What wrong with CFS3? Does it have major issues? I've read mixed reviews on it.
Is CFS2 more stable or what?
Or should I just go with Sturmovik?

I'd just like to see some opinions throwed around on these titles and then I'll decide.

I think it's a matter of personal preference.

Some people have both and like IL2 better, whereas some like CFS3 over the two. A lot of people don't have the hardware to run CFS3, so naturally they're gonna hate it Roll Eyes

Paz I've got CFS3 and IL2, and frankly I never play IL2, its too shoot-'em-up arcade style for me. CFS3 still maintains some level of reality, and a lot more missions and aircraft choices. If you've got a powerful enough rig I'd recommend CFS3, if not there are still zillions of people playing CFS2 here, there are on-line sessions and the like so its pretty damned good Shocked Oh and lots of downloads to keep you busy Cheesy

Paz. I never tried IL-2 & CFS3 refuses to run on my present machine so you might be wondering what I'm doing here. LOL

From what I've read, I think there are a few addons for IL-2 & although the situation is gradually improving there aren't too many for CFS3.
As Ozzy says, you can still have a lot of fun with CFS2 or even CFS1. Both should be reasonably priced now - if you can find them.  Wink

The only serious combat sims that I've been involved in have been Air Warrior (1988-1999) and Aces High, both excellent massively multiplayer online sims.  (Not to put down Warbirds, which is another good one - I just didn't participate in that one as much as the others)

Firstly - I haven't tried CFS 3 (being a poor student and all that...)

Anyway, IL 2 does have its advantages - mainly I find in the flight model, with much better characteristics on and around and in the stall if you use force-feedback (useful for dogfighting). Also, although you can just download freeware aircraft, invariably new aircraft are include whenever a patch is released (upcoming releases will see Tempest, Gladiator and many more (see www.il2sturmovik.com, www.il2center.com)).

It's a good sim, and if you can get it at a good price go for it...

IL-2!IL-2!IL-2! it's more realistic than CFS3 , more beautiful and the best WW2-combat sim i've ever seen. it's quite friendly to your hardware...and there's also a dynamic campaign generator for it.
more infos? visit the sites charlie mentioned above...

Il-2 actually feels like your flying but needs patience.

CFS3 is just an arcade game

  And the winner is...
I went ahead and bought IL-2 because it was only $15 and that should hold me over until the copy of CFS3 that I found on ebay for $20 gets here, I'll have to see for myself because you guys just made me more curious, both games were described as arcade like and both were described as more realistic than the other, so I'll just try them both, I'm also watching ebay for CFS2, might as well have all of 'em. The ones I don't like will go into inventory with all my other games, closing in on 500 titles.

Man, what if I like it? Then I'll have to make a page on my website devoted to my ass getting shot down all the time.
