I've decided that since I am now G-Max literate enough to design a simple plane, I'm going to do a Cub. Can anyone suggest a place where I can find good 3-views? I've looked here at Smviation, Flightsim, and AvSim, and haven't found decent 3-views yet.

Onnovanbraum's site. Its a great place for 3 -views of anything. Unfortunately i dont have the direct link to it (erased the cookies....darn they were yummy) but try searching Yahoo and Google and you're bound to find something, even if its not his site
Oh and ronnie, i think you're going a tad too fast on gmax. I know it may sound real easy but believe me its not. It will take several days, weeks, possibly months to fully comprehend the program. I suggest you go over every tute out there cause gmax is an extremely complex program...in time however you will eventually understand much of it

Even if i can't do it yet, there isn't any use not trying. I've done about six different tutorials, all of them focusing on a different aspect of design. It may take a while, but I'm willing to do it.

The important thing is to play with the program, and if you're working on a specific plane - make sure you make frequent backups and rename the versions so you can go back to the point just before you decided to give that Cub a swept back wing...

Now - have I ever told you about the first British Jet Bomber? It looked kinda, sorta a Lancaster with podded jets underslung ... or the infamous, Simviation -inspired 747floatplane .... Then there's the Neptoon....

yeah I agree with Oz and felix. but my advice would be to pick a nice and simple plane and make it knowing that there is a possability that you are going to trash it and make a new one. I say this because you are going to make your first airplane and when you have worked on it for like a month you will realise that you could of done so many things a diferant, and a more effecient way. things that you cant exactly learn in a tutorial, but you find just through plain EXPERIENCE.
atleast thats what it was like for me
so the basic message is that the first plane you make functions as just a fun way to get used to g-max, and that way when you actualy go through the trouble of making a panel, cfg, and air file, you have a nice looking airplane.
This is just my advice from things I found, it may not apply to you but I am just saying this from what I have found.

One question...the tutorials that i downloaded and used had 3 views included in .GIF format. How do i get regular pictures off of the internet and into gMax?

www.suurland.com
has good 3 ways, that is where I get all of mine, and I would recomend checking it out.
and the way you get it into g-max is you save the pic then in gmax go to views/viewportbackround and load it up into there. It may take a little while to get it how you like it
P.S I just went there and if you go under blueprints/light aircrafts its right there, its not teribly detailed but its prity large

Well, I've got the 3-views and I am getting them ready to go. The 3-views themselves are hard to get right, but I will fix them. They require alot of editing and resizing to get them proportional to the aircraft. This is actually alot of fun when you understand it a bit. It's almost eleven o'clock here in East Texas and it is a school night, so I'm off to bed. I will post tomorrow to notify you guys of my progress, which I must say is slow at the moment, but it's my first try at it. Until tomorrow...

I have some Matt Paul drawings of a Piper Cub. Much better than the outlines you'll find at the Suurland site.
Let me know if you're still interested and I'll e-mail you a copy (after I get my scanner working again - my yearly HD melt down happened again, right on schedule, and the scanner is one of the last things to get re-configured)
For getting the 3-views into Gmax to use as templates I'd recommend avoiding the background image method. Instead go to Felix's site and download the tutorials on applying the views as textures onto boxes.
Welcome to the world of 3d design. The learning never ends. As soon as you think you've mastered a technique, you'll discover there's 5 other ways of doing the same thing. You learn those 5 ways and then the publishers release a new version of the software.

When starting a project it's not important that the drawings match the scale set-up in Gmax. What is important is that they are in scale with one another.
You can adjust the size of the mesh at the end of the project to get things to their proper scale.
