Similar to the "3DS Max Bible" book, the "gmax Bible" has come out in print.  This is a generic gmax book, with a CD containing various samples, tutorial parts, etc.

It doesn't have a cradle to grave - create a plane in gmax and fly it - tutorial.  It covers the how to get through the program and tons of examples.  The color inserts do include screenshots of Jan Vissier's work...

It has 852 numbered pages, plus another 35 or so "index/content" pages, so it's definitely not a pocket book.
