You obviously are uncultured and not an avid reader of The Aeroplane Monthly.

Among the little gems in a "database" article on the Hunter, was drawing on a paper-only project study of a Hunter based business jet. Little more than the wings and tailplane was kept. It was to have been a cabin jet with space for 4-5 people (plus two pilots), with two rear mounted (within the fuselage, not podded) engines - intakes on the upper sides, roughly behind the wings, not on the wings, a la Hunter fighter.

(Maybe I should finish the one I started)

You Brits under estimate yourselves.Have you forgotten your Hawker Harrier?Well,its the backbone of our U.S.Marines close air support!The RR Pegasus is a work of aerospace genuise.Where is our supersonic transport?-It got emtied out of Boeings trash can 30 years ago!So I say bring those "Tea Suckers"on!!LOL!! I must say, that i didn't know about the Hawker Harrier! It is unusual in my experiance for Americans to think that something British is good! Damn Yanks, lol!(Only Joking!)

Gents, i have to share with you that I shared with a few other lists... I am sure you can also apreciate it Angry

Good morning gents,

At 0730 this morning I got a very pleasant surprise! After 5 weeks of waiting my Shackleton book has arrived! Avro Shackleton by Barry Jones ISBN 1 86726449 6. In the acknowledgements our very own Dean Wingrin is mentioned!

Now here comes the moaning part! The chapter on the SAAF Shackletons is a grand total of 9 pages long! With so many errors it’s just not funny.

Page 115‘s photo caption reads “1719/L, after having received all three phase modifications, is now at the Cape Town Waterfront Museum.” Now I am not so sure that we actually have something like a Cape Town Waterfront Museum and one can clearly see it is actually 1720 M on display outside NCO mess, Ysterplaat AFB.

Page 117 (rather sad page with 2 photos of 1718 just after she crashed) the one caption reads “now residing at the Swartskop SAAS Museum, 1721/N….” what is the SAAS Museum?

Something I found on page 113 seems extremely fishy to me. It states in yet another caption “Mr.2 WG532 shows the Glow Worm rocket flare installation on trial at the A&AEE, which the SAAF adopted as standard, but the RAF did not”

After looking at all of the photos of the Shackleton Mk3s flown by the SAAF I can not find any evidence of wing mounted brackets to which these rockets would be fastened as it is show in the photo on the Mr.2. Can any one confirm that we did fit them?

I have not even started to read the text regarding the SAAF, but I think it should make for a rather interesting read! I will keep every one updated.

The Hawks are now made at Brough or Warton, I forget. BAE Systems also are making a part of the F-35 JSF along with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin at Fort Worth, TX.

There are plans for a British production line. Also parts (e.g., empenage not components) of the AV-8B and the T-45 are made in the UK before shipment to Boeing.

Also MRA4 Nimrod is in production, slowly.

Westland make Merlin Helicopters and (do something with the)WAH-1 Apaches.

Many are overhauled with new avionics, system, engines e.g., Harrier GR.9 & 9A and T.12.

etc, etc...

Now on the issue of the Merlin, i would like to say that, the Merlin is one of my favorite helicopters and would very much like to see it as freeware. Although the Italian Navy has now got involved and has had the Merlin made to fit it's needs also, it does show that whne the UK does turn out aircraft they are generally of a good to high standard!(My point of view) Grin

I agree that the nimrod is a very nice aircraft! one of my current favorites! A Nimrod flies with the Red Arrows as a support plane, i saw it at Teeside airport last year! Grin

Well, the Nimrod is basically a much-modified Comet 4C airliner. Like all such modifications it never looked quite right to me. The MR.2 version used by the Red Arrows is not too bad & has been in service in the maritime SAR role for many years. I believe there are still problems with the ugly AEW versions. How anyone can think this is beautiful is beyond me. Embarrassed

These were intended to replace the faithful old Shackleton but went well over budget. This forced the RAF to purchase the Boeing E3D Sentry in order to fulfil NATO requirements. I feel it would have been far more realistic to have done this in the first place.

Henk. Your experience with the published word is nothing unusual. I think this would be best taken up with the author & publishers.

I admit that the AEW3 version of the Nimrod, is VERY ugly!!!! Undecided

But i think that the Nimrod Mr2 is very nice!
