Guys, I downloaded about 20 Mb of scenaries with my old 56k modem, and now am not be able to make them function properly. Angry
The fact is that when I specify the directory in which the scenary folder is contained, after naming it, by clicking OK the window of "specify directory" comes out again. It looks like it doesn't accept the directory. ???
I still have to understand where in the hell the file .bgl have to be put, if in a folder, and then putting this one in the "addon scenary" directory or simply in the "scenary" directory. Then, is the folder that must be specified/activated or the .bgl file ????

Thanks very much for help

Giovanni. Please read my Scenery Clinic to see if that helps.

Before downloading all that stuff I think it might have been better to try a small file first. Wink

Hagar, first of all thx for replying to me. See, I followed the instruction on the page you mentioned, but the files I downloaded have no texture sub-folders. They're just .bgl files...
Putting them in the pre-made "addon scenary"-"scenary" folder means automatically to activate them ?

Thanks a lot for your help

Giovanni

Giovanni. I suggest you use the same basic method for installing all scenery. Paste the parent folder containing  Scenery & Texture subfolders into the FS2002\ADDON SCENERY folder as described in my tute. (Not in the Scenery & Texture folders already there.) Then run FS2002 & activate it via the Scenery Library.

Some types of scenery (like terrain mesh) use default textures & will have none of their own. In this case they won't need a Texture subfolder but the principle is the same. Mesh scenery will not usually include extra airports & simply modifies the terrain in certain areas.

Hagar, that's it ! The files I downloaded are terrain mesh and have no texture folder. Are just .bgl files. Now : I put them in the FS2002/ADDON SCENARY/SCENARY folder. Is that ok ? The ADDON SCENARY box is still activated in the FS 2002 scenary library, so it should work prperly now, right ?  Cheesy

Thx a lot

Hi Giovanni. Yes, it will work using the method you describe. However, this is not the best method & could easily get confusing. It might be fine for installing one particular area but what happens if you install several different scenery areas using this method & one or more causes a conflict or other problem?
I would recommend configuring all scenery separately. To install/activate the mesh I would
Create a new folder with a Scenery sub-folder in the FS2002\ADDON SCENERY folder.
Rename the new folder with an appropriate name, for example Mesh1.
Move all those BGL files into the Mesh1\Scenery subfolder. Fire up FS2002 & activate the Mesh1 folder via the Scenery Library.

This way you can manage all your 3rd party scenery from the Scenery Library & activate/deactivate areas with a click or delete them if they cause problems.

Good advice as always from Hagar there. Wink

The other thing you should keep a close eye out for is scenery add-ons that use Flatten and Exclude commands. These are always referred to in the download documentation if required.

In order for you to be able to add these, the scenery must have a separate entry in the scenery.cfg file. (Actually there is a way around this, but to keep things simple I won't refer to it now).

To achieve the separate entry, the scenery and texture folder (if present) of your add-on scenery must first go into it's own folder. e.g. You'd make a new folder calling it "My New scenerys name (whatever you like)" and drop the folders into it.

That folder can then go pretty much anywhere in your FS2002 directory. I usually put it in the Add-on scenery folder.

You'd then add it via the Scenery library "Add area" button. This has the effect of adding it to the bottom of the scenery.cfg file (as well as enabling it in FS2002 of course).  Once there, you'd edit scenry.cfg with notepad, scroll to the bottom where you'll find the new entry, and add the flatten and exclude commands as detailed in the download.

GrinWell Tipster and Hagar you just answering the questions that I had for difficulties in installing and understanding  "Flattening" and "Mesh".  Man, does the learning never stop?  But its so much fun and satisfaction to see all this advice, go try it and it works.  I am having a lot of success in this now.  I am also spending an inordinate amount of time in here, but the wife says "Well, at least I know where you are"  lol Thanks Guys!!!!
