Is it possible to turn off the little Icon of the aeroplane that tells you where you are on the map view.
I would be able to use the map view just for information on VOR freqencies etc without it ruining the surprise of IFR navigation.

The way to do that is to edit your panel.cfg file for that particular aircraft. Takes some time if your going to do it for several.
Here's how:
Open the panel.cfg file (in the aircraft's panel folder)
BACK UP THIS FILE NOW! (In case you want to revert to default later)
For the 747-400 (default), here's what you want to take away:
Under the [Window00] section, you will see a numerical list of gauges (gauge00, gauge01, etc) These are the gauges that show up in the aircraft's panel. Find the gauge labled:
gauge55=SimIcons!Map Icon, 58, 111
Delete this gauge.
Save this and the gauge won't be there anymore, but I don't understand why having this there would be a problem. Why not just ignore the button and never use it? Still, to each his own . . .

Unless I'm mistaken, Will is referring to the picture of the plane itself once you've opened tha map view.
If so, then to my knowledge, no it's not possible to turn it off.

Thanks guys, The Tipster (all hail) is right. I have no problem with the map, it's the little give away Icon that annoys me. I guess I'll have to do what they do in real life and manually right down all the info I need prior to the flight. That and print out the relevant screens from the map view...
