Just bought FS2002... Many Questions (Read 616 times)

I just bought FS 2002 last night (I have been without a computer for about a year now) and while overall I am extremely pleased, I do have several comments.
I was delighted to find the Corsair in the lineup. However, upon trying to fly the thing I was treated to a screen flashing white and then normal. Obviously a video card issue if I had one (see my system specs below). This happened several times until I adjusted the resolution on the screen, but currently that's the only fix I have. It has happened mainly on several freeware planes and the Corsair, which is obviously a CFS2 transplant.
I'm not too sure the scenery is as good as it could be either. Would one of you nice people with a good video card post a screenshot or two of some of the generic scenery and buildings so I could compare?
Does anyone know how to alter the freeware planes so they appear under a manufacturers name instead of 'Unidentified'?
And lastly, I got up this morning and fired up the sim. I programmed a trip from Palwaukee airport in the Chicago area to Logan in Boston. I spent all day on this flight, used the ATC the whole way, from VOR to VOR, came up on Logan just as I planned and slightly ahead of schedule. I contacted Logan on the approach, was waiting for the reply, and the game crashed. Needless to say, after the things I said, my 15 month old twins looked at me like I was nuts.
Does anyone here know how I can change the amount of shared memory my computer uses? Don't ask why I don't have a video card, it's a long story.
But it's definitely a keeper!

Hey man,
first of all.... good choice with buying FS2002
about your question...
go to: FS2002\aircraft\[the aircraft you change folder]
and open the *.cfg file using the notebook.
the *.cfg file is devided to categories, the first ones are [fltsim.x] (when "x" is replaced with the growing number starting from "0").
go threw all the fltsim categories and look for the line that starts with:
"ui_manufacturer="
(if it's not there, add it). After the "=" write the name of the manufacturer or the name of the category you want it to be under.
for further questions you are welcome to contact me via E-mail or ICQ.

Hi Kevin, welcome to SimV. Don't worry my wife thinks I'm nuts! I think non-simmers don't understand, my advice get the twins on flying lessons ASAP.
Right the video issue, firstly have you downloaded directX v9 from M$? You need this to improve output. Second you really need a video card to get the best out of this game, how are you currently generating images (I know from the motherboard, but what system?).
Here is a shot taken of me in a Seafire S.47 in downtown San Fransisco
I'm currently running a GForce Ti4600, and this is with a few of the settings turned down!
Also to improve stuff, go to settings (in FS2k2) and adjust things in display and see what happens, the Autogen Settings, will affect the number of buildings per square mile.

Looks like I'm not the only one with a passion for Spitfires. Any hints on some good ones?

there's a mk XIV (or so) here in the vintage section.
and don't forget: even a cheap video card (like a GeForce 4-MX420) is better than on-board graphics. so go and get one!

You can save your flight at any time so if you mess up you can restart your flight and try again, good for the landing phase.

There's a small utility available which autosaves your flights every few minutes - very useful for when you or your system crashes!

It wasn't deleted.
You'll find it here:
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=fs2002;action=display;num=...
along with my own post. It was a double post and as is usually the case when this happens, one of them gets the bulk of the answers and the other one goes West.
It would be really helpful if, when this happens, the person who posted it removed the duplicate post. Only the person themselves and the moderator have the ability to do this.
