FS-2002 Utility (Read 1048 times)

New to the board, so my apologies if this has been posted before.  Quick question for the sages.

Back when I was flying FS2000, I used a utility called JAB-2000 for editing and assigning sound files, panels, etc.  Cool feature on JAB-2000 was if a particular wave file was missing within a sound directory or config file, it would look for a sound within the FS2000 folder.  If it found a wave file with the same name, it would ask if it could be used in place of the missing file.  In this way, you never (or rarely) had an error in the sound configs, and it sure was an easy way to assure every sound directory was complete.

Now JAB-2000 does not work in FS-2002.  Has anyone found anything that will do the same in FS-2002?

I'm afraid I don't , but that sounds like an extremely useful utility.

If you have an e-mail address for the author, it might be worth enquiring if an FS2002/COF compliant version would be possible.

Thanks for the reply.  And that's a good idea.  I will look for the source file and see if there is an address I can followup with.  I'll let you know.

Hi all,

Did get in touch with the original developer or JAB-2000.  Here is his response:

"This the right address. Thanks for your message.
JAB2002 will not be distributed on the Internet (nor elsewhere). Due to the
intense piracy encountered with the previous versions, I decided to stop
making my programs available except to the very little group of my very best
friends that I meet regularly. Sorry.

A+
Jacky"

Too bad.  A loss to us all.

A symptom of the destructive effect of piracy sadly.

Darn, believe or not piracy hurts everybody. I just don't get it! Why do people go around distributing files that are not theirs? What do they get by doing it? Urgh Undecided

Hey, try ADDIT Pro for FS2002, it does quite a bit and I think it will do the same for the sound files, I know for sure it will tell you what wavs are missing.

....your point is? ??? I have used it since CFS2, tried it, liked it, registered! Cheap, effective, useful! I get updates via email all the time. I have a version for CFS2 and FS2002, works for me. If you don't like it or can't afford a few bucks, don't register

Was this a payware program?  If it was, then I guess I can see the guy's point.  But if it wasn't (and most utilities like the one described aren't), I'm not sure how redistribution can be called piracy.  Surely freeware is created so that people can use it.

I've seen many freeware add-on creators who get upset when others steal or modify what they consider to be their property.  The problem is that (as I understand it, and please tell me if I'm wrong) their work is not their property - copyright belongs to the game manufacturers/distributors.

Hi Beery,

Some freeware developers (and I'm one of them) attach licences pertaining to the re-distribution of their uploads.

Personally, I have very good reason for doing this which harks back to the time when I used to run the FS2002 tips site. I've no wish to rake up the experience I went through again but suffice it to say that the major flightsim site that hosted it decided they'd take it as their own. I eventually "persuaded" them to remove it although it wasn't a pleasant experience.

Being freeware makes no difference to the copyright entitlement. It still belongs to the author if they wish it to do so.

It's not a question of trying to restrict it's access for users, more a matter of it being at the author's discretion who gets to distribute it. Some sites abuse the way they publish freeware making it undesirable for authors to publish there.

My own (limited amount of) stuff is exclusively uploaded at Simviation.com. I just have no wish to support and promote certain sites by giving them the right to offer my uploads as part of their service.

Hope that clears it up. Smiley

As a freeware author/developer/publisher myself, I guess I just don't see why an author should worry that much about how an add-on that was made with the intent of benefitting the flight sim community gets distributed.  Personally, I don't see what difference it makes whether or not my name is associated with my work.  My authorship is irrelevant - I do this stuff so that people can get more enjoyment out of the game, not so that I can claim ownership.  As far as I'm concerned, people can take my work, fiddle with it, redistribute it, or if they want, leave it exactly the same and claim it as their own.  I don't care as long as people get the benefit of the work.  The point is to make good work available to the community.  Everything else is irrelevant to me.  That's my philosophy anyway.
