Undecided Undecided Here are two tweaks that MS Support sent to me. That help with some of the stutter problem with CFS3.

1. Go to CFS3 Config/Custom Settings/ Window/Texture Info, then click on D3DPool_Managed (4 places)

2. Set up Hard Swap File size:
Go to Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced/ click Settings Button in Performance Section/click Advanced/ click Change in the Virtual Memory section. Write down the Initial Size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB) settings in case you want to go back to them.
Next, calculate your settings as follows:
(Your RAM in MB times 1.5) + 2 MB = your setting.
Type this value in both Initial Size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB). They must be the same. This will keep your swap file from fragmenting and eventually crawling.

And some other tweeks if found that help my game run smooth.
Issue: Improving Performance by Turning off In-Game Animations
Response: If you experience performance problems when using the game interface, quit the game and disable pre-flight animations. Note that this will disable your ability to preview aircraft before you fly. To disable pre-flight animations: but also loads faster and uses less resources.

Open Notepad. (Click Start on the Windows taskbar, click Programs, click Accessories, and then Notepad.)
On the File menu, click Open.
In the Open dialog box, navigate to game.xml and open the file.
NOTE: The location of this file depends on where you've installed the CFS3. The default location (and most likely it will be here) is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3\game.xml.
In game.xml, change "ShowUIWorld=true" to "ShowUIWorld=false".
Save game.xml, and then run CFS3.
Turn off Scenery and Terrain Lighting
Lower Terrain Detail and/or Scenery Detail but turn up Resolution
Turn down Clouds
Turn off Shadows
Turn off Dual Pass Rendering
Turn on High Resolution Z-Buffer

One addon that I found that really helped me out with the studder problem. Charles Simpson's CFS3Update v.1.4 u can get it at  http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?loc=archive&page=info&FileUploadName=charl...;
Dont know what it is changed to make it studder/stop/lag less but it does, on my computer. Also I do not know how compatable it is with online playing.

Being that i have a lowend computer i only installed the effect file. Make sure you read the readme and make a backup of anything you go to change.

To all who are looking to improve performance on CFS3;

1) at least have 256Mb of RAM

2) you don't have to turn anything down; all you need to do is add a small HD to your system. I recommend at least a 4 gig. Thats nothing today. What it does is if you install that and only run CFS3 off that aux HD it increases your swap file by 17x.

3) processor has to be at least a 850 Mhz

4) you need the right video card. I suggest nothing more than a 64Mb processor.Anything under 64Mb will run slow.

If you are running CFS3 then your system should be set for a slave HD

No disrespect to Ramsa, but all the tweaking is useless if the system fails at some level.

I forgot to add a few things.

Capt Redneck: Microsoft dosen't know their bottom from a hole in the ground. They tell you what their engineers tell them. They are NOT game players on a daily basis. Just programers.

Microsoft addressed the open GL issue but there are still alot of holes there. Best bet is to upgrade to play what you want.

A seperate HD is a direct link to the game files without a lot of serching on the CPU's part. That is the key.

As far as fixes for systems; if you want to play the game bad enough you will upgrade as necessary. MS used a new engine and without getting into specifics, it was designed for a game platform system.

Hi, this is my first visit to this forum. My PC runs the game fine except for the intermittent stutter (hard drive lights up).

Question for big_guns about the slave drive:

Do you mean install CFS3 on the slave drive or put the swap file on the slave drive?

Hey JSR_DVM, Sorry I didn't respond quickley.Been busy. What I am saying is install a small HD and load CFS3 program files to that only. Don't put anything else on the slave. I mentioned I suggest at least 4 G because of the swap file. When you access CFS3, it will create the swap file on the slave, provided you have the sys and tree logic there. Meaning your primary OS recognizes the slave and has written to it under the OS from the primary drive. I have to admit, there will still be a slight stutter problem with this set up from time to time. The reason for this is not any tweaking or hardware deficencies; it is pure and simple the program logic the game follows. It is weak with respect to logic and graphic loops. However, your game will run much better with the extra HD.I also have to revise my earlier comments: the game does not run well on anything less than 1.0 GHz CPU. This was discovered after extensive testing on systems with less than 1G. I hope this helps. Just for the record: I love CFS3 now that I have it up and running well. The down side; It took me six months to do it. You will hear from others on this site that they had no problems with just installig the game and playing it. I require quality out of my gaming experience and the game must run as close to perfect as possible. That's MY standard. CFS3 is a challange for that, but I have to admit getting better with MS patches and support. So, if you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks, big_guns.

I'll give that a try. I really have my doubts about this game being worth the trouble, at least for stand alone play. I haven't tried multiplayer yet, I imagine that is a whole new level of gameplay.

My setup is pretty decent, a 2.4GHz P4 with 512 MB PC2700 RAM, but I think the Intel MB is holding me back, as it only supports up to 4AGP. My video card is a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro and is capable of more.

I get framerates of 60-100 fps just cruising along, but these can plummet down to 15fps in heavy action. Very disappointing.

It's all up to you. Personally, flight simulators are an extreme hobby of mine. I am a Naval Academy grad, who hoped to be a naval aviator: however; I had an undiagniosed medical problem that will keep me from being a pilot forever. So, flight sims are my way to fulfill my ambitions. Thats why I try to get the sims to be as realistic as possible. My personal preference is WWII.  So for me, if I have to spend money to upgrade to get  a more realistic experience; I will. There are only 2 good WWII flight sims out there, in my opinion, CFS3 and IL-2 (org. or FB).

As far as you;it sounds like you have the hardware, except the aux HD, to run the game quite well.
Two things: check your FSB on the main. Your graphics card may not be getting everything it could. #2) CFS3 is a hog for mem and attention. You should run this alone. As far as multiplay; the servers out there are not that great, you may have better play experiences at a less graphic quality than you would with single player.

FYI- I run a 4.8GHz cpu with a 1:1 FIC 1st main, 2.048G RAM, 160G HD + 4G HD aux, 256Mb DDR ,16x , AGP ATI. Also , I run 6 Sony 4ft speaker stacks with an Audigy 3500 surround sound  5.1 digitally enhanced sound system, and a 27 inch HD TV off of a S-video connection. I still have problems from time to time with CFS3. Look at my earlier post, some of the problems are inherent in the logic.

If you really want to play the game you will. If it's not that important to you, it's not worth the money to play this game that well.

Canoe U grad, huh? Smiley

I was in NROTC at Ga Tech for 2 years way back when, then I dropped out and joined the Army National Guard. I did go to the first 2 summer "camps", so I did get to make the indoctrination flights at Corpus Christi.  The Scooter was a blast.

That sounds like some computer setup. While I won't go quite that far, I'll keep plugging away.
