I know you can make your own imaginary island, but I don't know where to start.  I've got FSX with the SDK, though I don't have a clue what to do with it lol.

Probably the easiest way, and what I would do, is to pick a suitable, ready-placed Autogen island of your choice, then place a runway there, on a FLAT spot, (I use Runway 3 Generator* for grass/dirt concrete/tarmac runways), then place all my objects around, using a mix of LAGO FSE, and Abacus' EZ Scenery, scenery designer programs.
Pick, drag, rotate, size, and drop, selected objects into place.

Instant scenery!

He's using FSX, Fozz Wink

Fozzer's right about not starting from scratch though. You could easily make a completely flat island anywhere you wanted, but adding terrain elevation is over my head.

Like, Paul (Fozzer) said.. Find yourself a nice secluded island somewhere to start with.

Here's a good program for FSX that will let you create aprons, taxiways, runways and place objects. It does a lot more things that you'll learn how to do after messing around with it:

Airport Design Editor
And here's a link to some basic tutorials:
http://www.scruffyduck.org.uk/ade/Tutorials.html

Also, once if you've installed the SDK, in the FSX in game drop down menu under "Tools" choose "Object Placement Tool" while in window mode and the Object Placement Tool menu will come up. You can place objects while in game with this tool.

Here's some instruction on the SDK Object Placement Tool:

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter silvered wings. Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun split clouds.....and done a hundred things you have never dreamed of.....wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovering there, I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long, delerious, burning blue I've topped the wind swept heights with easy grace where never Lark, nor even Eagle flew. While with silent lifting of mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of god"

From our friends at another great flightsim site, and its tutorial details the creation of an island, too:

... Grin... Grin... Grin...!

Its a funny old do Chuck... Wink...!

As well as exploring, I do spend most days adding all sorts of extra bits and pieces to my various FS 2004 sites all round the World... Smiley...!

Just in the process of adding "stuff" to the Faroe Islands (between Scotland and Iceland),
Adds extra life and excitement to my many FS 2004; fly-over, and landing areas!

Paul...exploring with a Cessna 150 and a cement mixer... Smiley...!

P.S...No time to take snazzy screen shots!... Grin...!

Thanks, got ADE, I just need to take the time to watch/read the tutorials, it's insisting every parking space I make is orphaned, even if I draw taxi points right to it.  Also it gave me a bunch of technobabble when I tried to compile, maybe because I didn't fix the faults first.

Do you have the SDK installed correctly?
There's a "Tools" option in the in game drop down menu if it's installed and working.

I Googled your error. Here's a thread that seems to sddress the same issue:

SDK might need re-installing, also that thread mentions EditVoicePack, which I have.  I'm in contact with someone from ScruffyDuck, so hopefully we can get this sorted out.

Here's a good tutorial on installing the SDK. It tells you how to activate it once installed Wink
