I have a set of Aeroplane Heaven Spitfires. I'm taking screenshots for a website & I'd like to add firing guns to Hurricanes, Mustangs, Thunderbolts, etc.

[SMOKESYSTEM]
smoke.0=0.0,3.25,  6.50, fx_jfgun01
smoke.1=0.0,3.25, -6.50, fx_jfgun01
smoke.2=0.0,3.00,  8.40, fx_jfgun01
smoke.3=0.0,3.00, -8.40, fx_jfgun01
smoke.4=0.0,2.90,  9.25, fx_jfgun01
smoke.5=0.0,2.90, -9.25, fx_jfgun01
smoke.6=0.0,2.70, 12.20, fx_jfgun02
smoke.7=0.0,2.70,-12.20, fx_jfgun02

I know I have to edit this example I have here. Can or will someone explain what these numbers mean for up/down, forward/back, left/right....?  I did it about 4 yrs ago & have forgotten!!  Angry   Shhhhh Embarrassed

Also, positive numbers = forward, right and up.

Negative numbers = rearward, left and down, all from the reference datum point.

cheers,

Thanks...I'm not sure what's meant by lateral.

I have this:
[SMOKESYSTEM]
smoke.0=0.0, 2.35, 6.69, fx_jfgun01 but the gun muzzle flame is too low. Which number do I edit to raise it?

Terry,

You can't change the verticle position of FS2004 Smoke effects in the [Smokesystem] section of the aircraft.cfg file. It's a (bug?)  in 2004.

One way to change it is to modify the position in the .fx file itself. Here's a discussion-http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?56704-Technical-Question-About-Smok....
The other way, as you see mentioned there, is to attach the smoke as a light effect because you can control the verticle there without having to edit the .fx file.

Note: the order of position definitions is also different in Smoke= from those in other position statements such as [contact_points] or [lights] sections.
Others are.....= longitude, latitude, verticle.
In the [Smokesystem] section it's smoke#=  verticle, longitude, latitude.
The verticle is normally left a 0.0, like in your examples, as no other value causes change.

Hello Dave.
Tthanks for info.
I added what AeroplaneHeaven has in the Spits to a AH Hurricane Aircraft.CFG yesterday & it took hours of editing & firing GW up to check! The screenshots look great though.

Since I put my latest post in I've added more to this P51 & have this:
[SMOKESYSTEM]
smoke.0=0.0, 2.35, 6.69, fx_jfgun03
smoke.1=0.0, 2.35, -6.65, fx_jfgun03
smoke.2=0.0, 2.35, 7.64, fx_jfgun03
smoke.3=0.0, 2.35, -7.64, fx_jfgun03
but the flashes are 6" too low, assuming a real p51 that is! I'm not sure what edit to raise them.
I'll digest your answer & play around more!

Are the gun flashes & cascading shell cases FS9 stuff? Amazing!

PS - ignore my THOGW post with your info here Wink
Have as good a 2012 as you can!

[SMOKESYSTEM]
smoke.0=+10.0, 3.00, 6.70, fx_jfgun03
smoke.1=0.0, 3.00, -6.65, fx_jfgun03
smoke.2=0.0, 3.00, 7.64, fx_jfgun03
smoke.3=0.0, 3.00, -7.64, fx_jfgun03

This is what I have...the flashes are in front of the gun ports but not high enough.
My editing doesn't raise them...what am I doing wrong?

Terry,

As I explained above and was explained in the link I provided, in FS2004 you cannot change the vertical location of effects in the [Smokesystem] section.
To change the verticle location you can either edit the .fx file or configure the effect in the [Lights] section, triggering  them with a light switch.

If you want help with either method, let me know via pm or e-mail.

Dave

I'll PM you in a tick.

I've discovered that using fx_jfgun03 (& got rather obsessed about it!) placed the flashes at one spot, but using fx_jfgun02 put it in a higher location. Effect 04 moved it again!  02 is the one for this P51 as they're almost spot-on.

I noticed that even JF makes mistakes - one Spit has 2 flashes but no muzzle ports behind them.....
