I have been fortunate to see the Redtail P-51 often, as my friend happens to be the gentleman in charge of the project.  It has been an amazing project from the ground up.

Let's just hope the love for special effects does not take over both the story and common sense, as it so often happens in movies lately. Roll Eyes

I read a book about these gents back a decade or more ago.  One of the pilots, when asked what made them so successful in their role as bomber escort, replied "We did our job.  We stayed with the bombers.  If Jerry took off for home or never engaged, we stayed with the bombers.  Point and shoot at him if he entered the box, but, otherwise, stay with the bombers.  And we had done SO much training for so long, that we just KNEW what to do when it came to doing it.  That came from keeping us in training for so long."

Kinda of pround and humble at the same time, don't ya think?

I was thoroughly disappointed by this film.

If anyone has seen the Red Letter Media review, they're pretty much spot on.  It's evident that Lucas played a huge role in this an sent it straight to hell, just like the Star Wars prequels.  The acting is horrible, everybody delivers their lines in an inexplicably stiff voice, and the white actors in particular do such a bad job that it's comical.  The characters aren't even two-dimensional, they're one-dimensional caricatures at best who I can't even force myself to care about.  And finally there are no redeeming features because the dogfight scenes are ruined by awful Lucas-esque cinematography that's constantly just showing the actors with jarring transitions instead of fluid flight action sequences.

Heh, I remember when Pearl Harbor came out.

The previews were all great action scenes and it looked really exciting.

Then I saw the horrible cast (I refuse to watch anything with Ben Affleck in it) and I knew it was going to be a piece of excrement.  Sure enough it was just a mushy chick flick with a few airplanes in it.

Now it has a 5.6 rating at IMDb, in my opinion far more than it deserves.

I'm with you on this... haven't seen Red Tails yet, but much as I want to like it, I know I won't, for the same reasons I cringe when I see any new Star Wars thing: Lucas is brilliant in his own way, but something bad happens when he actually directs real humans. His dialogue also makes me want to throw stuff at the screen. And CG is cool, but... it's just not the same.
At least Pearl Harbor had some decent live-action flying in it (and Kate Beckinsale, who was not only the prettiest thing on screen but also acted better than the rest of the cast put together)... but it still stunk, IMHO.
If you want to see a really good "WWII fighter pilot love triangle" movie, check out Dark Blue World... just a teeny bit of CG (where airworthy examples of certain types were nonexistent), but a terrific cast who really make you believe in the story (and the love story is not this cancerous growth hanging on; it fits with the rest of it). It's also a Czech production, about Czech figher pilots who join the RAF when their air force is surrendered... an obscure story that's worth telling. It also deals with the aftermath of the war, when that country got into even more trouble.
They also spent most of the modest budget, apparently, on Spitfires and making said Spitfires look gorgeous on film. In that regard, it's on a par with the great WWII flying movies from the 60s and 70s.

Then there's the perfectly good made-for-cable movie about the Red Tails... seeing that, I'm not sure why Lucas was still so eager to bring his version of it to the big screen.
