I just wanted to remind everyone to watch the 137th Run for the Roses on Saturday, May 7th.

The entries should be officially posted tomorrow, but for now, here are the contenders (not in post position order):

Once the entries are up, maybe we can do a pick the winner contest for fun. I know I'll be posting my selections.

Cool

I always look forward to my local pub sponsoring a little (technically illegal) gambling on a sport I know nothing about.

Or maybe the fastest one will get tired because he ran too fast to sprint the distance and a closer will win from behind.  Wink

You can handicap these races until the cows come home, but at the end of the day, any given horse can win on any given day. It's a tricky balance that I've gotten pretty good at figuring out. Once the entries are official, I'll make my selections.

Cool

Two cookies on Uncle Mo to place. I believe in blind luck. I think I'll watch the Derby this year. It may be time I start watching horses perform. Considering pro sports seem to be going to the dogs. (NFL)

It's funny that you say that because if you think about it, racehorses are pro athletes. Some love it, some hate it, some are champions and others suck. It's like any other sport.

The field is official:

http://www1.drf.com/tc/kentuckyderby/2011/profile-assets/PPs/2011-kentucky-derby...

Race Info:

Churchill Downs - May 7, 2011

Race 11 - 6:24 PM     Daily Double / Exacta / Trifecta / Superfecta / Pick 3 (Races 11-12-13) Super Hi-5
STAKES Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I)

Purse $2,000,000. For Three-Year-Olds With An Entry Fee Of $25,000 Each And A Starting Fee Of $25,000 Each. One And One Fourth Miles on the Main Dirt Track.

The winner will walk away with a cool $1,200,000. The winning jockey will make $100,000 in about two minutes.

My Selections:

3, 8, 18, 19

1st:

#3 Twice the Appeal: Looking for some value with this one. Was an impressive mid-pack winner at Sunland Park. Picks up Calvin Borel, which is a huge plus. Look for him up the rail late. Could be outclassed here.

2nd:

#8 Dialed In: Very impressive in the Florida Derby. Will look the repeat in a similar fashion. Leparoux is a plus. Will be the favorite. Use this one.

3rd:

#18 Uncle Mo: Was a monster in his first few starts. Finished 3rd last time out and draws a bad post. Johnny Velazquez is a plus. Might get overbet.

4th:

#19 Nehro: There will be a lot of closers in this race and I think Nehro will be one of them. Could just miss.

I have comments like these for all the horses if anyone wants more info. I doubt anyone is as into it as I am though.  Cheesy Cheesy

Cool

He will definately be a strong contendor from way of the pace.

This is a tough race to pick. You can make a case for a lot of these horses.
