First, tell us what version of FS do you want to model for, and perhaps, what 3d modelling experience (programs used, for example) do you have.

The generic answer is that you'll use either gmax or FSDS for the visual model, but there is a lot more involved to actually getting a working model into FS than just creating the mesh.

Hopefully, othes more experienced than I (since after almost a 1 year hiatus, I actually have to start going through the tutorials again!) will chime in.

With NO modelling experience, your initial choices are either gmax (freeware...  is actually with the initial release disc of FS-X, but you  need to download the gamepack -and updates- seprately), or FSDS f(commercial product) from Abacus Publishing (and you still have to download the gamepacks/updates from the Microsoft site)

Although I have been a user of FSDS from its beginnings (disclaimer - I have been in the FSDS beta test team), you should start off with gmax.  If it should prove too difficult, then go ahead with purchasing FSDS.

You may want to glance the sticky posts in the board for more information.

If you installed gmax correctly, you should have an icon on your desktop and of course, on your start menu.  Caveat - I am still using Windows XP, so Windwos VIsta/7 may  be slightly different.  At least gmax installs to c:\gmax so even then you should be able to go into that folder and click on the application icon.

Also, if you install the gamepack, a specific icon is created for you.  It is imperative that if you're going to model for FS-X that you always start gmax with the gmax /FS-X icon.
