Your Addon Aircraft Are No-Shows In QC

ISSUE: You'd like to use all of your addon aircraft in QC, but they are not showing in QC...particularly as opponents.

ANSWER: You need to edit your Quick Combat file to match the planes in your AIRCRAFT folder.  You'll need a utility called JSQCEd to do this.  You can download it here:

http://simviation.com/1/browse-Utilities-88-1

QC Editor lets you select the CFS2 installation you wish to edit and automatically loads the aircraft from that install into the dropdown menu where you can classify them.  You can also remove aircraft from the QC file that you have removed from your install.  Roll Eyes

Can I Make A Backup Copy Of My CFS2 Install?

ISSUE: Is it possible to make a backup copy of my CFS2 install?

ANSWER:  Absolutely.  The CFS2 installation program does not involve the use of registry entries, so just make a copy of the Combat Flight Simulator 2 folder for safekeeping.  Should your original install with all those nice addons become corrupt, just replace the CFS2 folder with the backup copy.  Wink

Two Frequently Seen Error Messages

ISSUE: You see one of the two messages below when loading CFS2 or Mission Builder.  Cry

ANSWER: There can be a couple of reasons:  Wink

- You have exceeded the CFS2 100-Plane Limit, and must remove some aircraft from your AIRCRAFT folder.

OR

- You have a corrupt or incomplete aircraft in the AIRCRAFT folder.  All aircraft folders must have four subfolders: Model, Panel, Sound, Texture...even if they are empty, so check recently added aircraft for this.

OR

- One of your aircraft has a Sound.CFG file aliased to an aircraft that is not currently in your AIRCRAFT folder...check recently added aircraft.

A Catapult For Our Aircraft Carriers?

ISSUE: Some of our planes are too heavy when loaded with ordinance to get off  the deck.  What about a catapult?  Cry

ANSWER:  Yes, you can install a catapult for each aircraft and modify your carrier to use it....

PROP Aircraft OnlyWink  For prop aircraft, download my tutorial on how to install the catapult.  It includes everything you need, and you'll find it here:

http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=1cfs2_catapult.zip&x=23&y=17

You will also fine a Corsair with the catapult already installed here:

http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=f4u4b_cat.zip&x=18&y=18

JET Aircraft Only:  For jets you just need to activate the Afterburner Function to get a catapult like launch from the carrier.  You will find a nice A4-E Skyraider already setup here:

http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=tr_a4e.zip&x=14&y=9

You can convert your own jets from this example.  Smiley

You Can Choose One Of Two Keyboard Layouts For CFS2

ISSUE: CFS2 will by default install the newer CFS2 keyboard layout, but most folks who came up thru CFS1, FS2000 and FS2002 are accustomed to the standard keyboard used in those sims.   Can I use that original keyboard layout in CFS2?  Undecided

ANSWER: Yes, you can easily do that.  From CFS2 Settings/Controller Assignments click the Reset Defaults button to bring up this screen.  Here you can select the CFS1/FS keyboard layout.  Smiley

NOTE:  If you have the CFS2 hardcopy manual, both sets of keyboard commands are included in the back of the book.

The Crosshairs Of The Stock Gunsight Need Adjusting

ISSUE: The stock gunsight needs adjusting, as the bullet stream does not match the crosshairs.

ANSWER: Open the panel.cfg file of the aircraft in NotePad.  If you do not have a [VIEWS] section, then paste the following text into the file after the [WINDOWS TITLES] section:

[Views]
VIEW_FORWARD_WINDOWS=%window_title_00%
VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=2.6, 0.0, 0.0

If you do have a [VIEWS] section, make certain that it reads as above.  Save the file.

Adjusting the number 2.6 up or down a tenth or two at a time will allow you to match the bullet impact with the crosshairs.  Each tenth gives very minor movement, so in some cases, you will need to increase or decrease your number significantly.

The View In The VC Needs Adjusting

ISSUE: How can I adjust the viewpoint in the VC?

ANSWER: Open the Aircraft.CFG file and look for the [Views] section.  It should look something like this:

[Views]
eyepoint=-1.85,0.000000,1.75

The three numbers change the vertical, horizontal and longitudinal position of the view (eyepoint).

If you don't find a [Views] section, add one.  Wink

Cockpit Glass Is Milky Or Semi-Transparent

ISSUE:  How can I correct milky or semi-transparent cockpit glass?

ANSWER:  If the glass has a texture BMP (in the texture folder), you can open it in DXTbmp (A free utility available here at SimV) and resave it in DXT3 format.  That alone may solve the problem.  If not, open the BMP in your graphics program and experiment with the Alpha setting until you find the best looking option.  The modified file must be resaved in DXT3 format.  CFS2 recognizes the Alpha channel of the DXT3 format (the last number).  Black (0) is totally transparent, while White (255) is totally opaque.

Note: Many models (particularly the newer ones) do not have glass textures.   They are 'material textured' within the MDL file and thus cannot be changed using the above method.  Huh

Addon Aircraft Appears With Fuzzy Textures

ISSUE: What can I do about some textures that appear slightly out-of-focus?

ANSWER:  This can be caused be poorly done or undersized texture BMPs, BUT many times it's just a matter of MIPs.

Open the extended texture in question using the freeware utilitiy DXTbmp.  In the Options menu uncheck the 'Include MIPs' block.  Now use the 'Resave Extended Format' command to resave the texture less MIPs.  Now look at your airplane...99 out of 100 times the textures will have cleared-up.  Wink

Running out of memory and crashing back to decktop?

Well, after my experience en missions in Korea with a lot of planes, explosions and AAA and several crashes to Windows decktop(run out of memory resources)I have finded finally the main responsable : SOUND.

Sound can be very hungry in machine PC memory resources. To test, before to do any modification to the settings in display or others , test the same mision without SOUND.

If the mission run OK and not crashes to Windows, you have there the answer of your problem.

Change the sound of your MiG-15, F-86,F-84, etc with a default one, the sound of the Lear for example is OK and gentle with the memory resources. Configure and aliase with the sound, take a liquid cooled sound for piston engine and utilise this one for F-51D, Yak-9, Il-10, etc, the sound of Corsair for radials like AD Skyraider and a twin engine sound, like P-38 for the big ones, B-29, B-26, Tu-2, etc. If you have three or four sound for your Korea hangar is enough and you reduce the risk of unexpected "surprises". Go for safe with well known sounds.

Thank you.  Excellent point, Pepelyayev.  The huge sound files that have become so popular of late are fine, if you have a large stash of RAM available.   However, 'aliasing' the aircraft's sound to some of the smaller stock files really can make a huge difference.   Wink

Engine Won't Shutdown?

ISSUE: Your engine will not shutdown at the end of the mission.

ANSWER: Try using the command SHIFT+F3; some aircraft respond to CTRL+F3.**

**
I personally have never been able to get either of these to work.  On those planes that you want to have engine shutdown, it's simple enough to add Master and Ignition Switches to the panel using CfgEdit.  Problem solved.
  Huh

To shut engine use shift+3.

Third Party Aircraft Fail To Perform In AI/Wingman Role.

ISSUE: Addon aircraft will not attack or deliver weps in AI role.

ANSWER:  Many freeware and payware addons will function normally as player aircraft, but will not work well in the AI/wingman role due primarily to MOI (Moment of Inertia) entries in the CFG and/or AIR file being so high that the sim cannot handle them.....particularly the Pitch MOI setting.  To fix this, you have to do some experimenting by reducing the MOI values until you find values low enough to allow weps delivery, but high enough to prevent aircraft instability of 'shaking'.

Aircraft.CFG files can be edited in Notepad, while AIR files require the AIRed utility here:

http://simviation.com/1/browse-Utilities-88-1

NOTE - There is a tutorial to assist you with this here:
http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=AI+Flight+Tuning&x=19&y=12

NOTE - Even a finely-tuned AI sometimes will not attack ground targets in mountainous terrain, because the sim cannot calculate attack solutions due to drastic variations in terrain elevations.

In mountainous terrain you have to adjust the waypoint angles the planes attack from. Only way to do this is watch how the AI attack. Doing my Pearl Missions for PHP I had to adjust alot of waypoints because the harbor had mountains on 3 sides and the planes would crash into them. After some trial and error I had over 140 planes attack with no crashing into the mountains.

Working in the PNG now I had the same problem attacking a target with mountains on every side. After a day or 2 all targets destroyed with no crashing into the mountains. Yes it takes some time but well worth it. Every situation is different and depends on the planes you are using.
