I'm starting this thread with the hope that it will become a 'sticky' resource under Important Topics at the top of the page containing all of the most common problems encountered in CFS2...and their solutions.   And I'll kick it off with the first post today, and invite everyone to chime in as well.  Cool

I'll kick it off with the issue of 'Exploding Jets', which seems relevant at a time when more and more jet aircraft are being flown in CFS2.

ISSUE: So you're flying your flashy new jet fighter and when you pull a tight turn the plane explodes.   Cry  What happened?   Sad

ANSWER A quote from Fox Four's Korea:  Wink

IMPORTANT CAUTION: In Korea, you have entered the very different world of jet combat, where speed and G-forces become critical factors and structural failure a real concern. It is important to understand that CFS2 was created for prop aircraft and, simply stated, the sim's performance parameters are not broad enough to cope reliably with all aspects of jet performance. The primary drawback is known as "Exploding Jets", which is catastrophic structural failure that causes your aircraft to self-destruct in mid-air.

THIS CAN BE EASILY AVOIDED BY MAKING THE FOLLOWING CHANGE IN YOUR CFS2.CFG FILE:

Open the CFS2.CFG file (Main CFS2 directory) in Notepad.
Scroll down to the [REALISM] section & change the StressDamage=True entry to StressDamage=False
Exit Notepad saving changes. That's it. No more Exploding Jets.

Disappearing Weapons?  Your nice new weapons are showing nicely on your airplane, but when you release them, they simply disappear.  What happened?

ISSUE: Disappearing Weapons

ANSWER:
Vanishing Weps???????
When this happens, the cause can be found in the DP file.  Your Payloads and Strings sections are probably choice...but my money says that your problem is in the Gunstations section.

You must have 'gunstations' for your weapons (bombs, rockets and torpedoes) as well as for your guns themselves.

Without these entries, your weapons will simple vanish when released.  In the example above the entries in bold have 3 and 5 as their first numbers.  2 is for Rockets, 3 for Bombs and 5 for Torpedoes.   The rest of the entry can be all zeros.....the trigger is the key.  This aircraft can launch bombs and torps, but not rockets....because there is no gunstation entry for the 2 trigger.

So if you run into this issue, first go to your DP and make sure you have the appropriate gunstations entries for your weapons.

Smiley NOTE:  DP files are best edited using DPed, which you can download here:

Engine Won't Shutdown?

ISSUE: Your engine will not shutdown at the end of the mission.

ANSWER: Try using the command SHIFT+F3; some aircraft respond to CTRL+F3.**

**
I personally have never been able to get either of these to work.  On those planes that you want to have engine shutdown, it's simple enough to add Master and Ignition Switches to the panel using CfgEdit.  Problem solved.

New Airplane Not Showing?

ISSUE:  You just installed a new airplane and it doesn't show in Freeflight, or you get a 'Failure To Initialize' error message.

ANSWER:  The most likely reason is that the new airplane does not have a SOUND folder, or in the SOUND folder the sound.cfg file is missing, or the sound.cfg file is aliased to an aircraft that you do not have installed.

A great idea, TR!   A place for all those common CFS2 problems (and their solutions) that continue to come-up on the forum periodically.....accessible as a STICKY...saves everyone a lot of searching within the forum posts.  Smiley

Making AI Aircraft Flyable

ISSUE: How can I make AI aircraft flyable?

ANSWER: Any AI aircraft can be made flyable and will show in Freeflight, if you open the AIR file and change the Aircraft Type from '2' to '0' and save the file.

You'll need AIRed (CFS2/Utilities download) to edit the AIR file itself, and the AI you convert will probably not have a panel, but you can add one from another aircraft easily enough.

AND someone has already done the work for you for the stock CFS2 AIs:

Taildragger Taxi Problem

ISSUE: My taildragger aircraft is almost uncontrolable when taxiing.  It wants to spin in circles when I try to make the slightest turn.

ANSWER:  Some taildraggers have a steerable tailwheel locked to the rudder, while others have a free-wheeling tailwheel.   Your aircraft is one of those, and there are no 'swivel limits' on the tailwheel.   You can fix that in the Aircraft.CFG file in the [Contact Points] section.  Locate the tailwheel entry (usually point.0) and then look at the 8th number after the = sign in that entry.   This is the swivel angle limit in degrees.  You'll probably find it set to something like 180, so change it to 45 and then check the difference in the taxi characteristics...you might even like 90.

Can't Do A Second Install of CFS2?

ISSUE:  You can't get a second install of CFS2 done?   Cry

ANSWER:  Strangely enough the install program looks for a 'Combat Flight Simulator 2' folder on your hard-drive and will stop, if it finds one.   So to avoid this, simply rename your original folder to something else like 'ORG Combat Flight Simulator 2', and you can do your second install.   Wink

Note: Because CFS2 is a free-standing program that doesn't depend on Registry entries, you can keep the program in a folder with any name you wish.

Third Party Aircraft Fail To Perform In AI/Wingman Role.

ISSUE: Addon aircraft will not attack or deliver weps in AI role.

ANSWER:  Many freeware and payware addons will function normally as player aircraft, but will not work well in the AI/wingman role due primarily to MOI (Moment of Inertia) entries in the CFG and/or AIR file being so high that the sim cannot handle them.....particularly the Pitch MOI setting.  To fix this, you have to do some experimenting by reducing the MOI values until you find values low enough to allow weps delivery, but high enough to prevent aircraft instability of 'shaking'.

Aircraft.CFG files can be edited in Notepad, while AIR files require the AIRed utility here:

http://simviation.com/1/browse-Utilities-88-1

NOTE - There is a tutorial to assist you with this here:
http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=AI+Flight+Tuning&x=19&y=12

NOTE - Even a finely-tuned AI sometimes will not attack ground targets in mountainous terrain, because the sim cannot calculate attack solutions due to drastic variations in terrain elevations.

Your New Droptanks Don't Work

ISSUE: You installed some nice droptanks on your new airplane.  They are hanging there on the wings but you can't select them, or drop them and you are not getting fuel from them.

ANSWER: To function, droptanks require a couple of things be done:

- The tanks should be mounted on dedicated hardpoints in the DP, not used for any other purpose.

- In the AIR file, you have to have droptank entries that define the position and capacity of the tanks.  See screenie below.

How To Test Your Tanks:  When you takeoff with droptanks, you are automatically flying on their fuel.  Switch to headsup view from panel view (W Key) and fly until your fuel reading is below 100%.  Select and release your droptanks.  When the tanks release, the fuel gauge should return to 100%, as you have switched to main tanksCool
