I built an i7 system about two weeks ago. To be honest I wasn’t expecting too much of difference in performance compared to my previously overclocked Q9650 based system but I wanted to see what i7 could do anyway. From the results I’m seeing in the sims/games I’ve installed so far even at my CPU’s stock 3.3GHz speed there has been a noticeable improvement in performance.

Tonight I started to slowly overclock to see how far I could get at just the stock voltage. Much to my surprise I’ve hit 4GHz at 1.208V. My CPU’s temp right now after playing games for five hours is sitting at 27.5C and I haven’t experienced one crash yet.

What are some of the temps and voltages that you guys are getting with your overclocked i7’s?  Is this the norm for an i7 just on air?

Its called you get what you pay for

Its normal for a extreme proc however I do think you will discover you will need to increase CPU voltage a bit after running FSX

I think its too low for 4GHz and it will probably start locking up until you raise it but none the less what you are seeing is the result of purchasing the better Intel components and the right memory

Thanks for the response.

You’re right it did. The next day with another sim it did finally lock up, it  didn’t require a reset just the help of task manager but still a lockup.

I turned the voltage up to 1.25V and it’s been stable again so far.

I was pretty amazed myself when I was able to reach 4 Ghz (even on air) with my i920.  But I DID have to bring my voltage up .... 1.232.  I use the "stutter" tool ... and couldn't be happier with the performance and smooth flying.

LOL, what’s the matter, you didn’t want to join in the fun with that discussion? It just keeps getting better and better by the day at AVSIM.

How about these two discussions that now claim that the ATI 4890 is the “new” magical video card for FSX -

Thanks for the info.

I’ve tried the “"stutter tool” with my Q9650 system but didn’t notice any difference in smoothness over locking the frame rate in FSX. I have not tried it with the i7 yet.

No, I dont want to join the NPA (National Placebo Association) so I feel better about going cheap and do anything I can to show I can run just as good if not better than the big boys with the right toys

Lets see, Bloom enabled, higher water shader passes enabled and ground scenery shader passes enabled, increased cloud radius on overcast
with a ATI card on DX9
and we get better results than a clocked i7/GTX 285 on CAS 6 in NYC?

The math alone on the memory subsystem and AMD does not add up much less the ATI card and the weather but his textures sure as heck give it away

What PT Barnum said is an understatement when it comes to AVSIM

He also said: "There's a sucker born every minute" in which anyone who runs out and buys that hardware will join the club

I wont waste my time in that thread

I hear you, but you still have individuals, like myself, who still haven’t learned their lesson and go for the bait in hopes that someone will see through the bull chit info.
