Just an FYI related to Vista and FSX

I have been thinking about moving to Vista soon since FSX will be updated with DX10. I asked around about anything important I should know and was told to make sure these updates were applied

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AE2F819D-C33D-48DB-A7E3...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=3FB80BB9-D832-425B-B42C...

and the recent update Phil Taylor stopped by and announced:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A156E265-40FF-468E-BBA2...

I was told to install them one at a time in the order shown and reboot between each install

I was told the first 2 should come automatically from Windows Update after I install Vista but that there had been mentions sometimes they do not take right using that auto method and it may require uninstalling the first 2 manually and reinstalling them one by one and rebooting in between.

I was also told to use this update for the second monitor iI have started using when I go to Vista

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ff1e7500-4bab-4b44-81e0...

Those are all x32 updates and there are different x64 versions of the same update available

I have not decided if I will go with Vista 32 or 64 yet but will all the hub-bub about memory problems I might go with x64 anyway even if it is patched.

Oh yea, one other thing!

In Vista FSX.exe must still be patched for 3gig memory use until they release the SP2 update. When that update comes out it will have that edit in the FSX.exe file so no messin with it is needed. According to what I read even if you dont use 4gigs of memory that still needs to be done.

Yes, to address the Out-of-memory(OOM ) errors before SP2 you need to:
1)install the Vista shadow copy fix from above
2)turn down Autogen
3)mark the OS for /3G
4)Install June 2007 DX runtime
5)mark FSX for /3G

Once we ship SP2, you will need to
1)install the Vista shadow copy fix from above
2)mark the OS for /3G
3)Install June 2007 DX runtime

There is still the potential that even with SP2 some scenarios could require reducing settings, but we really are trying to minimize the OOM issue

Thank you fou the update and the list of must-do's Phil!

I think I am going to go with Vista x64 to avoid any problems or need to edit anything. A friend rebuilt my tower late last year and moved me to XP x64 in the process and I have never had any OOM problems. My new quad-core rig built a few weeks ago is the same and also using XP x64. As a matter of fact I have found many more plus's than minus's with how well software seems to run. It appears computers and software are destined to move with the times and since hardware manufactures seem to be getting on the bandwagon now with 64bit drivers, I would rather move up than down.

I installed Vista 32bit and did a Windows updates. Then installed FSX and then load the default flight and reboot the system. Then installed the Acceleration pack, load the default flight and it was very good without any shuttering. Installed the new nVidia driver 169.25for 8600GT and did Nick's recommendations with nHancer. Still the default flight was without any shuttering. Then installed Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe reader. Then did defrag with O&O V10 using the Space defrag and reboot and did the 2nd Space defrag and reboot the system and then did a Named defrag. After that load the default flight and now there are heave shuttering. In the Spot view I have heave shuttering and every other second the screen moves and it is horrible. How can I get rid of this or what is wrong. Why the first flight was so smooth and with out any shuttering.

I know this post is old but I just saw it when checking out some links

John (Miltestpilot) passed away last year

The problem you were having is because of the SPACE defrag in V10 and Windows. That is why I stated to use O&O v8.6 for Vista because it does not have the SPACE defrag issue v10 has. See my post in the sticky at the top of the forum about v8.6

If you use v10 you should never run the space defrag after a name defrag has been run or you destroy the name defrag

Greetings Nick:  I am about to make some changes to my system, so will be reinstalling FSX.  Do you know whether the problem with v10 for Vista has been overcome yet, or should I use 8.6 for the Space defrag at least.

I got the feeling in an email from O&O that they didn't seem convinced by your view, so I have the feeling they weren't rushing to change their algorithm.

As far as I am aware, no its not fixed

Funny they have that attitude... they made it quite clear to me they were aware of the problem and were working on it

Hello guys,

And thank you very much for your interest and your feedback. I must admit, you gave us a rough time with all those identical emails.

First and foremost: as we now know what the occasion is, we are going to stop wondering.  We do not officially sell the version 8.5 anymore, but everyone has the right to downgrade his version, so all of you who bought version 10 and wrote us an email will get their 8.5 keys as soon as possible.

Concerning the technical problem you described: though the defragmentation routines in version 10 did not change, we had to optimize the software according to the new Microsoft API, which doesn’t allow us to manage free space in the exact same way version 8.5 did. We are in close contact with Microsoft, though, working out a solution.

Best wishes,
Leia B.
