The 100,000-foot barrier. M$ should, at the very least, extend this little barrier that has plagued us all since the very beginning.

And then, there is the Earth-is-a-cylinder mentality that M$ has. We all know that M$ shaped the Earth in FS using a cylinder. M$ better make sure to use the sphere this time so that those whose do long-distance travel can finally reach the poles.

If it's the same engine their using you can bet your bottom dollar that the 100,000ft limit will still be there and the world will still be a cylinder.

Both of these, especially the shape of the earth, are there because of the engines limitations. So, to get those changed there would need to be a new engine which would see the end of FS's compatability with previous versions.

Now to be completely pedantic, the world is not a sphere. It's an Ellipsoid.

Nah, it's ok. I like being reminded of the importance of backward compatibity. Besides, I just remembered about the scenery addons that can be affected as well. Roll Eyes

Indeed. It would take an entirely new sim. However, they've taken a whole extra year to make this FSX and they havn't had to worry themselves with CFS4/5 so you never know, they might have taken the plunge and remade FS from the ground up. (No pun intended)

A prototype Mig-25 got to 118,900 feet. However it definately can't sustained leveled flight that high.

I think Earth-is-a-cylinder is worse than the 100 000 feet limit.

I remember in FS98 you could go over 100 000 feet if you go fast enough, however suddenly clouds appear above of you.

We can also buy X-Plane  Grin

I agree completely with the author of the topic. The way the earth is modelled in FS just sucks. And I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to implement a conversion program to convert the sceneries/meshes from previous version to this new format.

FSX will be limited to 100.000 feet
FSX will have a flat and incomplete world preventing flying over the poles
FSX will not allow a correct modeling of Harrier/Osprey/any other hybrid aircraft
FSX will suck for acrobatics

... but I will buy it anyway, because it is okay for normal flying and offers great visual details.

...And X-plane gets more and more of my focus Wink

It just made something come back to my mind.
M$ has ALREADY implemented a real world system... guys, get an eye on M$ Space Simulator!!

M$ should have upgraded this game to make their Flight sims, that would have been absolutely great Smiley

And until customers start buying sims like X-plane over MSFS Microsoft will never change.  It's too bad because MSFS is soooo good.  Just some minor changes to the flight model and world model would make it perfect.  A little more modability and it could become a default engine for other flight and combat sims (the way the Doom and Unreal engine are in first person shooters).

Unfortunately I think the entire combat sim genre isn't going to survive unless they can find some common engine to build on.  (Are you listening X-plane people?)  If MS could fix these problems they'd expand beyond there current market in to one where they could license their technology.  for now, who wants to build a sim on their model?

But to do so would be an enormous expense.  All the work they've done to date would be practically undone.  Instead of tweaking and re-selling the old program now they'd be building from scratch.  Given MS's flagging commitment to the flight sim line of business I don't think it'll ever happen.
