Those lists are misleading. They imply that other hardware won't work, which just isn't true. All the lists mean is that the items listed will/should work.

The lists above are short on potential compatible hardware.

More to the point, the best mainstream hardware on offer today should suffice for reasonable performance, ie. CPU's of 3.5ghz and above, 1gb ram and nv 7800GT's and above.

FSX will run on a wide range of hardware, possibly down as far as an FX 5200, but it won't be pretty.

My advice:

Don't rush out and upgrade for Vista or FSX, wait until the software is released and watch what comes out in the aftermath, you'll soon have enough info to make the right choices to an upgrade path.

By the time the upcoming software is on the market, you will see some new hardware released and the current high end will certainly be available at a discount.

Don't be impatient and get caught doing 2 upgrades because you got it wrong the first time.

Looking for some info....  Im gonna to be starting a Traveling job working as an A&P Mechanic maintaining blimps, and am going to be purchaseing a laptop.

How well do you think a laptop with these specs, would run FSX

HP  ZD8000 series:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 650 w/HT Technology, 3.4GHz

2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM, 533MHz (2x1024MB
100 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600

these are the most important ones.

Also im curious out the Video Card, is says its a Pci card with x16 graphics with up to 256mb of dedicated video memory.   Is this a whole seperate unit or is it takeing the memory from the system memory, which would be 2.0GB

The X600 is going to be a poor performer, it doesn't match that CPU's potential. There are certainly better mobile options for MSFS.

That "up to 256mb" graphics card is an onboard graphics processor, and we all know what that means right people?

I'm afraid the X700 isn't gonna cut the mustard either sorry.

You all speak of Vista as though it's going to be as resource heavy as FSX itself. It won't be. It's an operating system. Yes it will require more of your system resources than XP, just like XP did with 98. But it is an operating system, designed to run while letting all sorts of other applications run on top of it. It will not require all the latest hardware to work. Just like XP didn't. Because if it did then it would be months before sales finally got underway as noone would update their OS without updating their PC.

What GFX cards are there that are much better for a laptop?

The requirements will be not as bad as a lot of people are saying.  This is the first time a 3D card has been required, so i would not expect specs to be any more than double XP. Wink
